Twenty-Six
The Aftermath
(A bride with a demand.)
It’s earlywhen I get out of bed just as the sun rises. I’m woken up by Fin crying and my phone buzzing. While I feed Fin, I check through my messages to see if Noah called or where he might be. I can’t track him on his phone because it’s either dead or he turned it off. He didn’t come back last night. Through dinner with his parents, the wedding rehearsal, Noah missed it all.
Kate, however, knows I’m missing.
Kate: Bitch, you didn’t tell me you were leaving town!
Me: I did too. You weren’t listening.
Kate: Good point.
Me: Miss me?
Kate: Terribly!
Me: I threw Journal at Noah.
Kate: And?
Me: He took it, left, and I haven’t seen him since last night.
Kate: What? Really? Where’d he go?
Me: No idea.
Kate: Now what?
Me: Not sure. My sister is getting married today. I might be getting divorced.
Kate: Welcome to the D-Club. It kind of sucks.
Me: I’m sorry, honey. You ok?
Kate: Yeah, but remember when I said the arrangement J and I had was great?
Me: Yes….
Kate: He freaked out when he found a box of condoms in my glovebox.
Me: Why would he freak out over that?
Kate: Because he thinks I’m having sex with someone else.
Me: But you’re divorced so….
Kate: Right? That’s what I said. But he didn’t see it that way.
Me: Are you having sex with someone else?
Kate: No! The bastard scares off anyone I might be remotely interested in. It’s just fucked up. I might kill him so you should really come back home!
Me: We head back in two days.
Kate: Thank fuck and good luck. Hey, that rhymes.
