Still trembling, she leaned back against his thumping chest while he recalibrated his balance. “That was sublime, baby, maybe the best I’ve ever had.”

“That was the best anyone’severhad.” He swept her damp hair back to kiss her bare shoulder. “It doesn’t get better than being with you. And I don’t only mean the sex.”

“Although the sex is fucking fantastic.”

“It really is fucking fantastic.” He agreed, turning her around to face him. “That’s because we’re so great together. You see, you and me, baby—”

She interrupted, bouncing her eyebrows playfully. “Hey, you think Biff and Candy will ever meet again?”

“Of course. She’ll be due for an oil change every three thousand miles.”

Billie’s jaw dropped as she pointed over his shoulder. “Oh my God! What is that? It says: ‘Smile, you’re on camera?’”

He turned and looked behind him. “Oh that? Security camera. Yeah, don’t worry, it doesn’t work anymore. Left the sign up as a deterrent.”

She wiped her brow with the back of her hand. “Whew. For a moment there, I thought we’d made a sex tape.”

“Unfortunately, no, although I assure you, this night will be featured in my highlight reel for a very long time to come,” he said. “Now, as I was saying—”

Billie pressed her finger to his lips as she shook her head. “Shhh…whatever it is, please don’t say it. It’s only the sex talking.”

“How do you know what I was going to say?”

“I can see it in your eyes. You’re hopped up on dopamine and oxytocin and it’s going to make you say something incredibly sweet, and my heart is going to believe every word of it because it wants to, so very badly. But then tomorrow or the next day, you’ll regret saying it in the heat of the moment. That will absolutely crush me, and hurting me will only make you feel bad. So please, baby, do us both a favor, and don’t say anything right now, okay?”

She placed a soft, lingering kiss on his lips to keep him quiet, and it worked for the time being even if she couldn’t have been more wrong. He wouldn’t regret what he had to say and it couldn’t stop the deep-rooted feeling from growing stronger. It had taken hold of his mind until it finally wrapped around his heart. Now it was only a matter of time before it all came out.
