She chuckled. “That saying actually works for us writers too. Thank you, sailor.”

He began to step back, but his watery eyes remained focused on her face. “As much as I’ll miss you, someone around here is definitely gonna miss you more.” He patted Sonny’s arm as he walked into the garage, giving the two of them their privacy.

“Well,” she said softly. “I guess this is it.”

Sonny pushed himself off her front fender and ambled over. “Yeah, I guess so.”

They wrapped their arms around one another, locking into a long embrace. “We’re going to be okay, you and me,” she whimpered into his shoulder. “You know how I know? Because I’m already much better than when you found me.”

“We’re better for having found each other,” he whispered, his heart pounding so hard she felt his emotions beating in her own chest.I’m going to miss you for the rest of my life.

After holding on for an eternity, Billie knew the time had come to let go. She gradually pulled back and took one last look at Sonny, memorizing everything about him so that she would always be able to find her way back to this moment by heart. If only circumstances had been different when they met. If only they’d had more time together. “If only,” she sighed.

A tear appeared in the corner of his eye. “If only.”
