“I think there’s a condition attached to that gift,” Connorsaid.

“Oh, yeah?”

“Are you hungry?” Connor asked.

“No. Are you avoiding something?”

“Maybe.”

“Turn around, Connor.”

“You sure you’re not hungry?” Connor asked.

“What is it? What did she say?”

“Okay.” Connor turned to face the bed. “Look right at me.”

“I am.”

“Now, answer honestly. Do you see any reptiles clinging tomy person? Because I want to make sure you’re completely of sound mind beforewe discuss something complicated.”

“When have things between us ever not been complicated?”Logan asked.

“The question has more to do with your mental state.”

“I’m good,” Logan said. “I see no reptiles.” He swept hishand through the air as if he actually had spotted a few but had somehowmanaged to make them vanish with sheer force of will.

“Okay, good. Let’s order some food.”

“Connor.”

Connor sighed. “I suggested to my mother that her treatmentof you earlier was maybe not befitting someone who’d just saved a child fromdrowning.”

“Well, that’s all right. I can’t remember how she treated meearlier.”

“It wasn’t all right withme. And I think after wetalked she saw the error of her ways. And agreed to apologize.” Connor gesturedtoward the nightstand that now contained her gift. “With one condition.”

“I’m listening.”

“She wants us to find a way for me to no longer be yourboss.”

Logan’s brow furrowed. “You have to be GM for at least ayear or the hotel gets sold. Isn’t that how the trust works?”

“Yeah.”

“Is she suggesting I stop working here?” Logan asked, voicetight, gaze level.

“No. She thinks there are changes that could be made to themanagement structure so that I’m no longer your superior.”

“She thinks it’s unprofessional that we’re…”

“Sleeping together.”

Logan’s eyes shot to his. “It’s a lot more than that, isn’tit? I mean, were not just sleeping together…right?”

“Beyond right,” Connor said, acting blasé, but feelingrelieved Logan said it first. “And she thinks so too, apparently. Or at leastwants us to have a shot at whatever a lot more than just sleeping together is.And she thinks we won’t if I have to be your boss during this stressful time forthe hotel.”

Logan’s expression softened, and the first signs of a smilecame to his lips. “Well, that’skindanice. So howwould this work? This management change, I mean.”
