Connor turned on his bedside lamp, blinking sleep from hiseyes.
“They’re not getting fired.” On his feet now, Logan stumbledtoward his overnight bag and the pile of T-shirts within.
“Doesn’t matter,” Donnie said. “I’m doing what I can, but ifyou don’t talk them down from the ledge, they’re going to jet.”
Logan checked the clock. Almost eleven p.m.
“When did this go live?” Logan asked, pulling clothes on.
“The blog post went up this evening, but she got a hold ofit about two hours ago and now it’s got five thousand retweets.”
“Read me the tweet.”
“Porn star staff and a hotel full of kids. Is this whata new day at Sapphire Cove looks like?” Donnie read. “Then she’s gotscreen grabs of their O-faces right next to their real names. This woman’s afriggin’ rage machine. She’s going after people who didn’teven work there when her husband was blackmailed. The Washington Postdoesn’t even dox porn stars.”
“What’s going on?” Connor asked.
Phone to his chest, Logan gave him a brief synopsis.
“We need to go downstairs and talk to them before they quit,”Logan said. “If they walk, we’re down two men on the overnight shift, and Imight not have anyone to cover the fire stairways to this floor.”
“You’re already dressed. You go.”
“We should stay together.”
“I won’t leave the room, promise,” Connor said.
“Youpromisethis time?”
“Absolutely. Don’t waste time on me. Go. I’ll keep the doorslocked.”
Logan moved to Connor’s side of the bed and knocked threetimes fast and then two times slow on the edge of the nightstand. “That’ll beme and only me. Don’t open the door for anyone else.”
“Got it,” Connor said.
Logan set his phone down on the nightstand, gave Connor abrief, hard kiss on the lips, mostly intended to distract his boss from thefact that he’d opened the lowest nightstand drawer and pulled out his M18 Sig Sauerand the waist holster that went with it.
“Woah,” Connor said.
“I had Brandon run it over earlier. Don’t worry. I’ve got apermit.”
“Does the hotel?” Connor asked.
“Nope. I’m carrying this as an off duty private citizen, ifanybody asks.”
Once he was finished fastening the holster, he gave himanother kiss on the lips, then headed for the door.
“Throw the deadbolt after me,” Logan said.
Connor nodded.
Logan lifted the phone to his ear and was out in thehallway.
“Where are they?” Logan asked Donnie.
“Management offices,” he answered.
Shit,so they’ve already left their posts.
