“I’m just a chef.” It was all she said.

Chapter Seven

Skye was floored when she saw Diehl in Sunday School class the next day, sitting next to his brother-in-law, Ivan. She had arrived at the church parking lot at the same time as Matt Garnett, who helped carry her tray of breakfast from the church entrance to the classroom.

Skye was telling Matt about how much she liked the new reading lamp she bought from Matt’s antique shop, when she spotted Diehl talking to his brother-in-law.

Brinley was nowhere to be found.

“Where do you want this?” Matt asked as he headed to the side table where other breakfast items went.

“Anywhere.” Skye thanked him and then opened up the cover of the large rectangular tray. She had brought thirty eggs-in-a-basket, and they all looked lovely, if she did say so herself.

In fact, she had already eaten two at home, saving four more for her own Monday morning on-the-go breakfast.

Skye tidied up the table, making sure the food trays all lined up. Someone had brought mini muffins. Yummy. Skye thought she’d try one of those. She was looking for a paper plate when she heard a voice beside her.

“Good morning.” Diehl’s voice was low key, almost like a whisper in her ear.

“Good morning. Glad you’re here.” Skye offered him a paper plate.

He took it. “What did you bring?”

“Eggs in a basket.” She handed him a serving spoon. “One egg in a nest of hash browns. This side of the tray is over medium, and that side is over well.”

“Good. Glad there are choices. I don’t like runny eggs.” Diehl made his selection.

“Neither do I, but many of my clients do.”

“Let’s not talk about work.” Diehl offered her coffee.

She declined. “I drank some before I left the house. I try not to drink more than one cup a day.”

“Why?”

“Too much caffeine. I much prefer mineral water.” Skye looked around. “Is your sister here?”

He shook his head. “She’s not feeling well. Her feet are still swollen. She decided to watch the livestream of the service instead.”

“Oh dear.” Skye didn’t get a text message from Brinley. Really, it wasn’t necessary because they weren’t singing in the service until this evening.

“Last minute. I went to pick them up, but only Ivan came out of the house.”

“I’ll be praying for her.” She wondered if Brinley could make it tonight. If not, they had Diehl.

“Thanks. She had a smooth first and second trimester. She said she hardly threw up. One last mile and the baby will be here soon.”

Skye had nothing to say about it. She had no personal experience of carrying a baby.

“Ivan’s an excited dad,” Diehl said in between eating the egg. “This is good. Will you make this for me?”

“Sure. We can cook anything you want,” Skye said.

“I’m sorry. Didn’t I say not to talk about work?” Diehl grinned.

Speaking of work, Skye remembered that Diehl’s name wasn’t on the couple’s baby shower invitation list. She made a mental note to ask Brinley if she wanted to invite her brother. Regardless, she had planned to make extra food in case there were last-minute guests. Also, some might not be able to make it.

The Sunday School class started with Matt filling in for Benicio Ketteridge, who was out of town visiting his family. Skye chose to sit in the back with Avery Chung, who walked in just as Matt took the lectern.
