“Oh? On a Saturday?” Skye read it.
Her face dropped.
“What?” Diehl asked quietly.
“He’s now the majority shareholder of my restaurant.”
Diehl could hear the disappointment in her voice.
“I hoped to earn enough to buy out Talia, but now I have to deal with Jared.” She winced.
“What are you going to do?”
“What can I do? I don’t want to sell him the rest of Saffron. All my brother’s hard work went into it. In my mind, I see Seb and myself owning the restaurant again someday.”
“Where’s your brother now?” Diehl had met Sebastian before, but they weren’t friends.
“Athens. One more year and Em will graduate.”
“Has he said anything about Saffron?”
“Not lately.”
“Why not if the restaurant is so important to him?”
It took a moment for Skye to reply. “It was important to him when he was dating Talia. It was their love project together.”
“So youthinkhe wants it back.”
“I know my brother, but he won’t want it back with Talia in it. It would cause trouble for him and his wife.” Skye’s finger flew to her mouth. “Actually, I don’t know. I’m guessing.”
“As someone who has been married before, I can tell you that it’s best if the husband and wife are on the same page.”
“I suppose that’s best for any strong relationship.” Skye sighed. “Maybe God is telling me to let go of it. It’s only a restaurant.”
“Do you think Jared will sell his shares to you?”
“You know, I have no idea,” Skye said. “I might be able to persuade Talia to give up her shares—as Jared apparently has for part of it. But whether he would ask her is another matter. I just…”
Diehl waited.
Skye pursed her lips.
“Just what?” he asked.
She shrugged. “Maybe it’s just me.”
“Just you what?”
She drew a deep breath. “Yeah. It’s probably just me. Some people are the super-friendly type, and I’m not.”
Anger flared in Diehl’s eyes, surprising himself. “Are you saying Jared tried to flirt with you?”
When she didn’t say anything, Diehl could put two and two together.
“We all have our idiosyncrasies, you know? While you can avoid people you don’t want to be with, what if they’re your business partners?”
“Say no more.” Diehl knew exactly what she meant.
