“I always knew he’d come back to me.” Fiona crossed the carpet, flipped her hair over one shoulder and smirked. “He made me come so good. But you already know that, don’t you?”
“He fucked you, but he never loved you,” I screamed yanking as her hair, slapping her hard across the face.”
“You bitch! As if he loves you—” She snarled, coming at me. But Freya got in between us and finally Fiona left, slamming the door behind her.
“Freya?”
“Yes, poppet?” She tried to comfort me, but I pushed her arms away, disgusted by her and yet understanding why she craved what they did to us.
“Help me. Help me get out of here. Please. You understand. I know you do. It’s not too late for me, to stop this before I end up like you.”
She stroked my hair, helped me stand, “alright. I wished there was someone to help me when I needed to escape. Come quickly, wash yourself up. Take my dress and my purse. Use my money and cell phone… he probably has yours tracked.
“He does.”
“You won’t get far without your passport, so that can’t be helped.”
“It’s in my purse.”
“Good. But be smart, don’t use it yet, he has everyone on his payroll. Let me think…there must be somewhere you can go?”
“There is. And someone who can help me get there.” I took her purse, and her discarded dress and walked into the bathroom shutting the door. I dialed the number I knew by heart, speaking low, in case Christos ever suspects she helped me.
“Andre? I need help. I need to escape from Capri. Right now. It’s bad.”
“Where are you?”
“Dimitri Santos’ house.”
“I know people.”
“I know you do.”
“Get to the docks.”
“Okay. Call me on this number. He has my phone tracked.”
“You’re going to be okay California. He won’t be able to hurt you anymore.”
I nodded through my tears, forgetting he couldn’t see me. I washed my face as best I could, put my borrowed dress on and walked out on shaky legs.
“Go! Quickly. Walk down the front stairs, like you haven’t a care in the world. Waltz out the front door. Hand the valet my ticket. I drove here. I’ll stay…pretend I left to find another group to join and you stole everything. There’s not much cash, but enough in case your friend doesn’t come through.”
“Thank you.” I hugged Freya briefly, wiped my tears as I fled. This time he won’t catch me, because I don't want to be found. I’ve escaped the devil once and won’t be foolish enough to be caught twice.
No one paid attention to me as I clung to the shadowed halls. They were all too consumed in their sexual mind games to notice the girl with the soul sucked from her walk past like a ghost.
He did that to me.
Took everything he always said he would. I should’ve listened. Should’ve heeded the warnings, but I was a foolish girl who believed in true love.
He was right.
A man with no soul cannot be one’s soulmate.
I handed over Freya’s ticket. Drove out into the hot summer night as if the devil was on my heels.
“Are you California?”
