“Ah,glykía mou,” I whisper, tracing his face with my finger. “Why didn’t you shine for me?”

I put my earbuds in and scroll to my music file so my phone. Memories of Christos fill my head as I listen to the song that speaks to my heart.

A honk outside has me reluctantly taking my eyes away from his face on my phone as the song ends. Ben waves. My heart sinks because I wish another man was waiting for me.

I grab my backpack from the floor and hurry out.

“What happened?” He asks as I open the door, sliding in.

“She… had a “friend” over.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah. They decided to christen my side of the room and my bed.”

“You need another place to live.”

“I know,” I sigh, letting my head fall back against his heated leather seats.

“Like today. I can’t let you go back there. After class today we’ll pack you up.”

“And go where?”

“Home with me. There’s plenty of room.”

“I can’t. I need to rescue myself.”

He rolls his eyes, pulling away from the curb, “Even the strongest people need the help of their friends at times.”

“I know. But I can’t. We just met yesterday.”

“Are you sure the dorms are full?”

“Yes. I’ve been asking weekly. I’m on a list. I slept in the barn last night.”

“What?” He rips his eyes from the road.

“It worked out. I have a job.”

“Mucking stalls and tacking horses for the team?”

“How did you guess?”

“My ex, rides.”

“Is her name Cressida?”

“Bloody hell. You met?”

“We did. And let me just say..., you dodged a bullet there. She’s not a good person.”

“No, she isn’t. She pretended for a bit though.”

“Why…?” The rest of my question fades away as I stare at the huge stone “house” he pulls in front of. He gets out, then opens my door.

“Welcome to my family’s London town home, Eastwick Manor.”
