Shanna and Dev both turn, looking back at us.

“We’ll drop him at the safehouse the guys use when they make their runs north.”

“No. He knows where we are going now.”

“Fuck. I’m already a dead man, but if I let you leave me behind—he’ll feed my body parts to the crows. I know a way in.”

“You better not be lying to us,” Dev warns.

“No ma’am.”

“Keep going north. We’ll pull off twenty minutes from the border—I need to take a leak.”

Shanna passes her empty coffee cup over the seat.

“What? Fuck no!”

“Suit yourself,” she shrugs.

He has just enough freedom to relieve himself. Shanna turns the stereo up, so we don’t have to listen. A few miles later she pulls over and lets the windows down enough for him to toss it into a rest stop trash can.

“Don’t fuck with us. Okay?”

He nods. “You bitches are brutal.”

“Did you just call us bitches?” Dev’s eyes look back at him in the mirror.

“You did just make me piss in a cup.”

Devon’s eyes cut back to the road.

I look down at the phone in my hand. “Smith sent me fifty texts.”

“How many have Rog and Duke sent you?”

“Don’t know. We left our phones in Springdale.”

“I’m so screwed.” The pledge mutters.

I scroll through Smith’s texts:

Smith:You’re over your head, babe.

Smith:Don’t get mixed up in Dev and Shanna’s drama.

Smith:Do you really think this is going to end well?

Smith:Just tell me where you are sweetheart. I promise I won’t hurt you. Well… maybe just a little bit.

I bite my lip, remembering how he “punished me.” But the last text has me breathless.

Smith:I’m coming for you.

Maybe Dev and Shanna are onto something. Knowing an alpha man is hunting you down is a thrill you can’t buy.

My pulse beats rapidly.

Goosebumps break out over my skin.

My thumb hovers over the phone.

But I don’t text back.

Because, I don’t even know where to begin with all I want to say.
