I shrug. “I see her every time I close my eyes.”
“Jesus. First Rog, now you. The both of you are so friggin’ pussy-whipped you can’t see straight.”
“Your day will come, too.”
“Fuck no. I’ve seen how the two of them mess with both you and Rog’s head. I’m keeping mine clear.”
“My balls are freezing. I got better things to do then shoot the shit with you. Go on, get the hell outta here.”
Instead, Mac takes out a smoke.
“I think I’ll just hang out here for a bit…in case you need back-up.” He grins taking a drag.
“Fuckin’ pretty boy.” I grunt.
“She ain’t inside. She likes to take walks at night.”
“Why didn’t you go with her?”
“She’s not alone,” he smirks.
“What the hell does that mean?” My fists clench.Roque? He wouldn’t dare.Would he?
He flips me the bird as he leaves. I debate keying in but know that’ll only piss her off more than she already will be. I walk back to my truck and wait in the heated cab for my woman to walk out of the woods and ponder just who will come out with her.
I trudge back through the snow alone, pausing when I reach the end of the path by the side yard. There’s a huge, black truck parked out front.A familiar one.
Smith.
Hell no.
“Hell no!” I roar, fighting the snow as I try to run through thick snow. He stands in the shadows, leaning against my door. “You! YOU—can’t just show up here after ghosting me for months… after showing up in my studio that rainy autumn day and then vanishing after? And then leaving me that night I thought we had a chance of maybe getting back together in Canada? Leave. Now.”
“Damn, woman—I’ve missed you.”
Even in the dark, I feel his hot eyes taking me in; making me burn.
I cross my arms. “Well, I haven’t missed you. GET OUT!” I finish with a scream, incensed by the sheer gall of him to just show up announced, and out of the blue, one random weekday night.
“Liar.”
“Why are you here? Don’t even answer that because I don’t care. You chose to get out of my life, so stay out. Did you know I thought I was pregnant? I was so scared… terrified as I sat by myself waiting for the stick to change color.”
He breathes … “Are you… were you?” He finishes noticing my flat belly.
“No. But it was the longest two minutes of my life. Because I wanted it to be true and it scared the shit out of me.”
“I’m sorry. I was hurting so bad that night. It was selfish of me, but I needed you.”
“I needed you, too Lucas. Every damn day. I thought we would have a chance to talk about everything in Canada, but you left to play the hero. Did you at least get Trent?”
“Can I come in?”
“No,” I answer, ignoring his soft-spoken plea by letting myself in to the warm heat of my home and slamming the door.
“Baby, it’s cold outside.”
My lips twitch, despite my wrath. “Very original. Still not letting you in.”
