“I’m happy, babe. I am. I can tell you’ve already been working hard,” I joked, rubbing a finger across the dried paint on her cheek.
“Then why don’t you look it?” She started pulling away, afraid I’m the flame about to burn out after she went all in.
“I just wish it was in California,” I sighed, raking a hand through my hair. “Shit’s falling apart, babe. I need you with me.”
“I am with you. I want to see where this could go with us.”
“I already know. The end. You are going to be at the end of every road I walk down.”
“You better not be fucking with me. My mother would smack me upside the head if she knew I was moving my whole damn life for a man I’ve known for barely a month.”
“Come here. I meant every word I’ve ever said to you. I know shit’s been fast and we still live in different states, but this is going to work out. I know it. But I’m pissed Rog is taking your money when he doesn’t need it.”
“He didn’t want to. I insisted. Besides, Dev still pays.”
I laughed. “He’s been putting her checks in a savings account. She’ll be getting every penny back.”
“I start work next week. I need to fly back to Chicago, pack my things, and terminate my lease.”
My shoulders fell. “I was hoping you and I could spend some time together like we planned.”
“We can. My flight’s on Tuesday. I can’t wait to see the clubhouse and meet all the men in your MC.”
I turned, “Do you know what this means? You’re my woman and under the protection of the Club from now on. I can’t go with you to Chicago, but one of my men will. I’ll have your car driven out. I don’t want you driving cross-country alone. No fuckin’ way.”
“Is this really happening?” she looked at me with all the light in the sky shining in her eyes.
“Yep… and I was thinking tonight.” She was teasing me knowing how long I had waited to make her mine.
“How about right now?” She winked.
“You’re killing me, babe.” I groaned as she backed away from me, lifted the hem of her shirt seductively with both hands and teasing my eyes with the five inches of flesh on either side of her navel.
I never thought I’d take her like I did.
But then again—I can’t picture it any other way.
It was us.
Earthy.
Elemental.
With a low growl, I stalked forward catching her by the waist. I hauled her over my shoulders and stalked away from the house.
“Smith? My bed is the other way.”
“I’m not taking you under another man’s roof, babe. I’m taking you under God’s.” It was cheesy as hell, but true. I felt like she was made for me and I was gonna consummate that fact under the sky.
I carried her to the edge of the meadow in back of Rog’s rental property and put her down when we reached the beginning of another wooded path.
“Walk with me, babe?”
She eyed the path under the dense trees. “I’d go anywhere with you.”
With our hands linked we walked deeper down the old logging road until I reached a clearing thick with blooming wildflowers. At the base of a pine tree I peeled off my plaid flannel shirt and laid it down. When I turned back around, I found her naked, standing behind me. “Luce. You take my breath away.” I reached down, plucking a flower from the grass and tucked it behind her ear before I pressed my lips to hers. Her hands found my belt buckle. In seconds I was undressed. We stood like Adam and Eve staring at each other with awe. Everything with her felt surreal. That early autumn day as I held her in my arms and pressed her down in a bed of pine needles, tongue, lips and fingers touching hers—I found my heaven on earth. Her soft hands reached out, gently closing around me as her thumb flicked my tip.
A shudder ran through me.
