“Holy shit. My company put several offers on the table. We tried to buy that shit.”
“I know. I wanted to let it go.”
“Why? Why are you choosing this life?”
“It’s what I need. I’m not cut out for the boardroom.”
He shook his head, “Think, Smith. The bloody days are never over. Look what happened tonight.”
“I know. And all I was trying to do is end one. Maybe it’s for the best she goes. Forgets all about me and the love we could’ve had—she’ll be safe and far away from all this shit.”
“Chicago isn’t exactly the safest city in the world. People can get hurt anywhere, at any time.”
“But I’m the one who hurt her the most. I told her she was my road to forever, but I left her at the curb.”
“Is she still waiting there?”
“No.”
“Think about what I’ve said. If you don’t get out of Creed, at least hand over the patch and gavel. They’re both too heavy for you, brother.”
“I can’t. There’s no one else. Will is old as fuck. Duke is basically out—Mac is too young…” He clasped me on the back and I’m not ashamed to hug him. “Love you, brother, take care.”
“You too, Smith. If your girl comes back to Chicago, I’ll protect her.”
“I know you will.”
“Do you need me to handle anything else before?”
“No. Thanks for having my back tonight.”
“Always,” he answered, shutting the door as he left.
