Without making her fear him.

Or look like she was going to be sick like she did right now.

“Jenner,” Tobias warned.

Right. He saw it. She was pale and worried.

“I’m so sorry!” she cried. “I didn’t mean to upset you. Are you mad at me?”

It was tempting to gloss over how he’d felt. To let this go so he didn’t risk scaring her. But he knew that would be doing a disservice to their relationship.

So he kneeled in front of her and reached up to cup the side of her face. “Listen to me. I’m not angry. Understand? I could never be angry at you. I will never again yell at you out of fear. But I was afraid. When I tried to find you and you weren’t there, I feared the worst. I thought that bastard had somehow snuck in the house and stolen you from me.”

“I’m so sorry!”

“I know you are, baby. I know you didn’t mean to scare me.”

“I didn’t want to disturb you while you were working and Tobias was outside. I should have left a note.”

“You should have come and interrupted me. Always interrupt me.”

“I will. I promise.”

“That’s my good girl.” He drew her into his chest, hugging her tight. “My best girl.”

She leaned back, biting her lip.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know. I feel bad for scaring you. I don’t think I’m a very good girl.” She glanced down at her lap and he shared a look with Tobias.

“I think it’s time,” Tobias said from where he stood, leaning against the wall in the living room.

“Time for what?” she asked, alarmed.

“Your first spanking,” Jenner told her.

Um.

Spanking.

No. She didn’t think it was time for that.

She shook her head. “No, no, no.”

“Are you saying no because you don’t think you deserve this or because you don’t want to be spanked?” Tobias asked.

Well. Cupcakes.

Why did he have to go and ask her that?

She didn’t want to say that she thought she probably did deserve this. That seemed to set a bad precedent.

“If you don’t think your body is ready, tell us,” Jenner told her. “I would never want to actually harm you.”

It was a good out. She could tell them that she was still sore from being run over by a car and it would probably buy her another month or two.

But the truth was, she was feeling pretty good overall. Still a bit stiff and she wouldn’t want to run a marathon anytime soon. But a spanking likely wouldn’t harm her.
