“Not this time,” he reassured her, brushing her hair back off her face.
Good. That meant she wouldn’t have woken Jenner.
“Take a deep breath and let it out slowly,” Tobias advised.
“I hate being like this,” she told him. “I feel like I should be able to push past it.”
“Hey,” he said firmly, grasping hold of her chin and tilting her face back. “You were kidnapped. Hit by a car. You sawsomeone being shot. Those are not things you just ‘get over’. Hear me?”
He was right.
She knew he was.
Immy nodded. “I guess I just want to feel normal.”
Tobias grinned. “You’ve never been normal.”
What? How rude!
“Someone as special as you could never be normal.”
Oh well.
That was actually really sweet.
“Come on, let’s get you in the shower.”
She nodded. She felt all gross. Sweaty and sticky.
Tobias got out of bed, then lifted her into his arms and carried her into the bathroom. He set her down and held her against him with one arm as he turned on the shower.
“You guys always take such good care of me.”
“Good. That’s our job,” he told her as he stripped off her pajamas and panties. “Think I was put here on this earth to take care of you.”
“That’s so sweet.”
He snorted. “I’m not a sweet guy. You go telling people that and you’ll ruin my rep.”
Immy grinned. “Big tough gangster is secretly a sweetheart.”
“Only for you, my precious girl. Only for you.”
After they showered and Tobias had dressed her in a new pair of pajamas, he sat her on the bed in front of him so he could brush her hair.
“I’m not as good at this as Jenner,” he warned.
“It doesn’t matter. It just feels nice,” she replied as he brushed out the tangles.
“What are you thinking about?” he asked.
Everything.
“Do you think your mom would have liked me?”
That wasn’t what she’d meant to say.
He paused and she tensed. Cupcakes. She’d said the wrong thing.
