“Give it to me,” he panted against my lips, voice low and commanding as he fucked me roughly, his hips chasing the movements of his hand. “I need to feel you fall apart.”

If it weren’t for the fact that I barely knew this man, I would have begged him to fuck me with something other than his fingers, imagining what it’d feel like if he were inside me.

“I…”

He braced his forehead against mine, staring down at me as he curled his fingertips, making me gasp.

“That’s it, fuck my hand,” he growled, pressing harder, his harsh breaths fanning against my cheeks as I moaned, my eyes slipping closed. “No, don’t you close those eyes. Fucking look at me when I make you come.”

Blinking against the pleasure threatening to drag me under, I locked eyes with him, helpless as he drove me closer and closer to the edge. His dark gaze sent a thrill through me, and when his thumb pressed hard into my clit, I shattered against him, falling apart in his tight hold.

“Oh fuck, Tripp,” I moaned, arching my back and gasping as he continued the movements of his fingers, fucking me right through the orgasm like a man possessed.

“That’s right, milk my fingers,” he growled, leaning in and resting his lips against the side of my neck while he slowed his movements. “God, I love how hard you come.”

My heartbeat hammered in my chest as my eyes slipped closed, my fingers clenching his tightly as I found my way back to myself.

“I’m still mad at you,” he chuckledafter a few moments, his lips pressed against the side of my neck, and I heaved in a deep breath, following suit with an exhausted giggle. “But I’m so fucking glad you’re safe.”

Mycockthrobbedinmy jeans as I drew in a relieved breath, smiling at the soft chuckles escaping Rhey as she dragged her fingertips through the sweaty hair on the back of my head.

I hadn’t been lying. I was so angry with her, but relief was winning out over the terrifying frustration that she’d put herself in that deadly position in the first place. Relief that we were both safe once we’d gotten far enough away.

She put herself in danger that could have taken her from me before I got to feel her like this. Before I tasted her lips. Before I felt her pussy clench against my fingers. Before we got to spend more than one tension filled afternoon with each other, dancing around an attraction unlike anything I’d felt before her.

That fire could have stolen her from me. And maybe that was why I’d pushed things so far between us. I was running on adrenaline mixed with panic, and in that moment, relief that I’d found her converged with the anger and lust running through my veins. That one fiery kiss took over and flushed out the anxiety the flashbacks brought, replacing it with something much more potent.Her. Touching her…feeling her fall apart had been my new focus, and it pushed all the bad memories out.

“Oh, my God. My sister,” she gasped against my cheek, her voice suddenly morphing to alarm.

Pulling away, I released her hand, gripping her waist while I waited for her to unlock her legs from my waist and find her footing.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, brushing the hair that’d escaped her braids from her forehead and crouching to look in her eyes. “What’s going on?”

She gasped, reaching for the pocket I’d watched her shove her phone into before, but when she pulled it out, there was just a scrap of lace in her fist. She looked at it in confusion before she looked up at me, clearly embarrassed that she’d just pulled a pair of panties from her pocket. But that would be a discussion for another time.

“Oh God, where is it?”

I reached for her other pocket, but it was empty. Stepping back, I scanned the dirt around us, not seeing anything on the ground. She must have knocked it loose at some point.

“Holy shit, how could I…? Oh God. No,” she cried, her lip quivering.

“It’s just a phone. We’ll get you a new one once we get back to town. I’m sure—”

“No,” she wailed, cutting me off, a tear streaking down her cheek, leaving a track through the sweat and grime I hadn’t realized was probably covering the both of us. “The reason I was on that road. My cabin was in the evacuation zone. And my sister was at home. She was asleep, and oh my God. We have to go back. I can’t…”

Pulling her into my chest, I cupped the back of her head, stroking her hair as she shook in my arms. “I’m sure she’s fine. There were crews working on the evac who were checking residences in the direct path. They’ll have found her.”

She shook her head, sniffling as her fingers gripped my shirt. “No, you don’t understand. She’s a nurse. And she works the night shift. Most of the time she comes home, turns off her phone and puts in ear plugs before she crashes.”

Fuck.Yeah, that’d complicate getting her out of that cabin on her own, but Baker wasn’t the type to let any residence go unchecked. And from how he’d talked about the Thomas sisters, I had a feeling there was some unresolved business with Rhey’s sister. “If they saw signs of someone being home, they would’ve pulled her out. And you don’t even know if the fire got that far.”

“You saw it jump the road,” she whispered, voice broken, her tears wetting my shirt. “We live—lived—less than a mile from there. Oh my God. What if Reese is gone? And I was so distracted by…”

“Hey, look at me.” Crouching down and grasping the sides of her face, I waited for her to make eye contact with me. “You wouldn’t let my panic take over, and I won’t let yours. Breathe.”

“But now we’re in the middle of nowhere, miles from where I need to be and…” her voice cut off, eyes welling with tears. I tried to figure out a way to reassure her. I wasn’t sure where she’d lost her phone, but it’d happened sometime between now and when I’d pulled her out of that truck. Leaning forward, I kissed her softly, rubbing my thumbs along her cheeks until she calmed slightly.
