When Levi had the gate open, we drove on the dirt trail toward one of my favorite spots on the farm. Even though I didn’t want to own and manage a ranch anymore, this place would always have a special part of my heart. Even more so depending on how today went.

We crested a hill, and up ahead I spotted it. The same windmill from our sibling tattoo. It was one of the first things I showed Farrah when I brought her and the kids over the first time.

Farrah reached over and put her hand on my thigh. “Such a beautiful view. I can see why this place means so much to you.”

It was pretty here—you could see forever, and with the green grass and black cattle dotting the hillside, it seemed like paradise. I rolled down the windows. “Smell that fresh country air.”

“Smells like cow poop,” Levi teased.

“Hey now,” I said with a smirk. “Okay, maybe a little bit.”

I pulled up alongside the windmill, where its pump spilled water into the tank, and turned off the car. We all got out, and Farrah walked to the tank, gazing into the water for cattle to drink.

When she turned back to me, I was on one knee, her kids on either side of me.

She covered her mouth with her hands and shook her head. “Gage, are you...”

“The ring?” I asked Levi.

He placed the velvet box in my hand.

“The flowers?” I asked Cora.

She retrieved the bouquet of dandelions I’d asked her to pick at The Hen House from behind her back.

“The drawing?” I asked Drew.

He pulled a wrinkled paper from under his oversized shirt.

I held up the drawing and flowers, waiting for her to read the words I’d asked Andrew to draw once I got all the kids’ permission.

Will you marry me?

Tears filled Farrah’s eyes as she looked between me and the kids. “You three were in on this?” she asked them.

Levi put his hand on my shoulder. “He asked us permission, Mom, and we all want Gage to be in our family.”

Cora nodded. “We love him, Mom.”

“And we know you do too,” Andrew added.

“So say yes?” I asked. “Because I want this to be my family for the rest of my life.”

Farrah carefully set her flowers and drawing on the ground and knelt in front of me, taking my face in her hands. “You sealed your place with us long before you asked. I love you, Gage Griffen, and I’d love to be your wife.”

Happy tears formed in my eyes, and I slid the ring over Farrah’s finger as her children cheered for us like we’d just scored the biggest home run of all.

I never thought I’d get a tattoo, but here I was in a tattoo parlor with my best friend and soon-to-be sisters-in-law, ready to go under the needle. I hadn’t decided what I would get Gage for a wedding present, and with the big day tomorrow, we were running out of time.

When I confided my problem to Mia, she said, “What more could you give him than forever?”

That’s when I knew that getting this symbol, permanently on me, would mean more to him than anything else I could think of. It had been his siblings’ way of reassuring him that they’d always be there for him.

And now? It would be my sign that I would too.
