I had completely lost my mind. I knew I had.

But I slid my fingertip across his phone anyway, giving full consent to sexual activities between the two of us, agreeing this relationship between us to myself. The consent to have sex could be revoked at any time, but my silence? That was under Gage’s control.

And the freedom of knowing that whatever happened between us was only between us?

It was heady and made me want to do things I’d never done before.

With Caleb, I initiated in the bedroom sometimes and so did he, but over time, sex became more and more infrequent. Even if I dressed up or waxed, it seemed like it was just a method for him to come, not a chance to pleasure me.

But the way Gage looked at me in the bathtub, the way he spoke to me? I knew he was doing exactly what he wanted. And out of all the women he could have... he wanted me.

Whether it was for a night or a year, it didn’t matter. Because he was right: a relationship wouldn’t work between us. But that didn’t stop the desire coursing through my body every time he got near.

So I watched him sign the document himself, and then he said, “There’s a copy in your personal email inbox.”

We stared at each other for a moment, the realization of what we’d just done, what we were about to do, dawning over us.

“How long do you have your sitter?” he asked.

I glanced at the watch on my wrist. “One second.” Tapping at the screen, I called my mom’s phone number. After a few rings, she answered, her voice filling the hallway.

“Hi, honey, how’s work going?”

Glancing up into Gage’s eyes, I said, “Something came up and I’m going to have to work later tonight than I thought... Do you mind keeping the kids overnight?”

“Of course, honey. I’ll pack a bag for them and keep them at my house if it’s okay.”

“That’s totally fine,” I said. “I’ll pick Levi up at ten to bring him to his game.”

“Perfect, I’ll let the kids say goodnight while I have you on the line,” Mom said.

My cheeks heated for some reason. The woman Gage saw in the bathtub and the woman saying goodnight to her children felt like two different people. But then my sweet kids came on the line.

“Mommy, are you working late like Daddy always did?” Cora asked.

In fact, I was working late exactly like Daddy did. But I wasn’t abandoning my family. No, I was no longer abandoning myself and my own desires. So I said, “I hope you have a great night with Grammy, and I’ll see you in the morning, okay, sweetie?”

“Okay, but can I bring my hot cocoa bomb with me to Grammy’s?”

“Sure thing. Make sure to bring one for the boys too.”

“I will,” Cora said.

Gage slid his hands over my hips, pulling me closer to him. His hard erection pressed against my front, making it hard to breathe.

“Mommy?” Andrew said.

“Yeah?” I breathed, fighting to keep my voice normal.

“Can I bring my Lite Brite?”

“If Grammy says it’s okay.”

“Yes!” Andrew said, his voice already growing distant from the phone.
