"To be honest, there really isn't much to tell."
"Well, how about starting from the part where you knowCarter fucking Green. You kept that one a secret, didn't you? What other skeletons do you have in your closet, girl?"
I spend the next thirty minutes talking to Brenna in between phone calls and people coming to the desk, about how I knowCarter, the night of the wedding, the embarrassment of the following morning, including the part about me vomiting in my hotel room. She did say she wantedallthe details, so I leave nothing out. Without realising, I've struggled with keeping this all quiet and it feels good to speak to another human about it. I feel like I've been hiding this huge secret, even though it's really quite innocent.
"Wow. So, Carter's brother is married to your best friend, Autumn, and you and Carter want to fuck?"
"Yep. Wait. What? No. The first bit is right. The second bit is wrong. We are just friends," I clarify a little too quickly, and Brenna looks at me suspiciously.
"Soo…" She lingers. "You like him, huh?"
"No," I hastily reply to her.
"Sureee, you don't."
"Look, it is really complicated." Without explaining further, I try to end Brenna's interview.
"Oh stop," she interrupts. "It's only complicated because you’re making it complicated. You're adults. You're both single. You're both hot."
"He's my best friend's brother-in-law. We are just friends. That's all it is, and all it will be." As politely as I can, I finally shut down the conversation just as the Friday afternoon rush starts to pick up.
Although it’s nice to share the story with someone, I feel a little uncomfortable talking to Brenna about it, only because I haven't even talked to Autumn about it yet.
I will, there just never seems to be a right time. I'll try and get her alone tomorrow at dinner.
Chapter 9
Carter
Me: There might be a change of plans for later.
Alice: Letting us all down? Wow. Rude.
Autumn: Change of plans?
Sawyer: I swear to god, if you back out of dinner…
Me: Not backing out. I just have something for us all to do instead.
Autumn: Oh?
Me: You might want to dress warmly.
Sawyer: If this involves my wife being cold, it isn't happening.
Autumn: Hey.
Autumn: I can speak for myself.
Autumn: But if this involves me being cold, it isn't happening.
Me: *sad face emoji* come on. Live a little.
Alice: I'll do it if Autumn does it.
Me: Pressure is on sis.
Autumn: Fuck you, Alice.
