“I’m training as the assistant manager, so that’s cool.” I figure if I stick to things about me, she’ll get the hint.
“You could run your own shop,” she says, shocking me. “You see the big picture and you’re great with people.”
“Thanks.” It’s uncomfortable to take the compliment. So I change the subject.
I glance between the two of them and say to Jayce, “I’m surprised you texted me.”
He wipes his mouth on a napkin and says, “Madyson asked me to.”
“But you’re okay with me being here?” As much as I enjoy spending time with them, I won’t insert myself where I’m not wanted.
Jayce sits back in his chair and his leg brushes mine. “I’m overprotective of Madyson. I won’t apologize for that. You’re a wildcard.”
“Would anyone be a wildcard or just me?” The pit in my stomach sinks deeper.
Jayce takes his time as if he’s weighing his words. “It’s important that your past won’t be a problem in our future.”
I take in his words and they roll around my brain. The mountain of debt I’m under isn't an asset in a relationship. When I’m constantly my mom’s caretaker, it’s hard to have a relationship. And I can’t afford date nights in New York City. I can’t contribute anything to the relationship.
“Is there something you want to tell us?” The heat from Jayce’s leg seeps into me.
His question confuses me, so I ask, “What are the rules and expectations? I’m unsure how this would work.”
“We’d like to take it slow. We’re not putting expectations on you.” Madyson twirls her hair around her fingers so tight they turn white.
“There are a few rules,” Jayce says. “We’ll start with the three of us. Until we build a trust, you shouldn’t be alone with Madyson. But if you want to meet for coffee or lunch out, I’m fine with that.”
I’m staring and I can’t stop myself. He really doesn’t trust that I can control myself. “I won’t force her to do something against her will. I would never do that.” My jaw clenches and my voice hardens.
“If I thought you would do that, you wouldn’t be sitting here,” Jayce says without malice.
“Jayce can be a Neanderthal, but I still love him.” Madyson’s body jerks and I wonder if she’s kicked him under the table. “It’s more like we want to get to know you for who you are now. I knew you as a teen, trying to escape a terrible home life. I’m sure so much has happened and you’ve matured.”
Jayce shrugs as if he’s not bothered by being called a Neanderthal. “It would be like normal dating, but with more people. We’d like to find out if we’re a good fit for each other.” He’s serious and my dick isn’t happy. “I…we don’t have any concerns about sex, but you might.”
“We’re asking for exclusivity because we’ll give the same.” Madyson’s eyes are puppy dog wide and imploring.
So many unresolved details such as is Jayce a top, bottom, or vers. What are their favorite things about bringing in a third person? But those aren’t relevant right now.
“I’m not into casual sex. Is this short-term fun for you? Every relationship is a gamble on whether or not it will work out, but I expect the potential for more.” I lay my cards on the table, hoping they don’t end the game.
Madyson vibrates with excitement.
“I can’t make any promises, but I won’t set limits either.” Jayce picks up Madyson’s hand and kisses her palm.
She melts and I’m jealous that they’re not touching me.
“It sounds like sex is off the table, but what about other things, like kissing and…” I can’t decide if I should say orgasms because they fall under the category of sex.
“Definitely kissing.” Madyson takes my hand and Jayce scoots his chair closer.
“Tomorrow night, the Enforcers play at home and we could go together. I’ll bring you to the team box.” Jayce has his leg glued to mine from thigh to ankle.
“A box like a suite?” It’s a stupid question, but I’ve dreamed of being rich enough to sit in a box to watch a game. I don’t even have enough money for the cheap seats. It’s a luxury so far down the priority list.
“That’s perfect!” Madyson exclaims. “Do you follow the Enforcers? Who’s your favorite team?”
I shrug as if I haven’t been obsessed with the Enforcers since meeting Jayce back in high school, watching every game I can. “Yeah, I like them.”
