Only when the taxi pulled away, its red lights disappearing around the corner, did I turn around and head back inside.
CHAPTER10
Sarah
My heart clapped against my ribs when the doors slid open and Jamie reappeared, greeted by two security guards who’d just run past me.
He hadn’t seen me. I willed myself to breathe, allowing myself to appreciate his physical presence.
He looked impeccable.
There was no other word for it.
The white of his shirt accentuated the wide plane of his chest, and the sleeves of his tux jacket stretched neatly across his biceps as he readjusted his cufflinks.
When I’d first seen Jamie at the bar, I’d almost frozen in place. He was gorgeous.
And he’d been talking to another woman. Jealousy had ripped through me.
Until she left.
Now, Jamie looked like he’d cooled down a little from how rage-filled he’d been on the dance floor. But only a little.
A moment later, the security guards shook his hand, then made for the door.
Then his eyes landed on me.
I almost, almostmelted into a puddle. In this moment, I knew I would do anything he asked.
Anything.
Then I remembered how furious at him I still was.
I ignored the heat swirling inside of me, lifted my chin, and walked over to Jamie Reilly. My heels clicked on the marble, and I had to bury the urge to tread more softly, like I normally did.
I stopped only a foot away from him, angling my face up to his. “I told you I couldhave handled that asshole on my own. I was about to head out to security to get him kicked out.”
He didn’t even blink. “I’m your security, Sarah.”
I ignored the tingling that danced over my skin at those words and took a bracing breath. And the shaking in my hands at what I was about to do.
This was it. The moment of truth.
“Jamie, I’m going to ask some questions,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “I want you to answer straight, for once.”
His temple pulsed, but he didn’t hesitate. “Fine.”
“Did you hit him?”
“No.”
“Did you think I couldn’t handle myself?”
“No. But I couldn’t stand by and watch anyone looking at you like that. And Gary and I have history.”
I swallowed. They did. Maybe he would have acted the same if it had been anyone else. Or maybe there was something more.
Then, heart thundering in my chest, I asked the only question I really wanted an answer to. The one he’d never given me a straight answer to before. “Jamie, why are you still such an asshole to me, after everything we’ve been through?
