Eden and Loki had nodded, faces tense.
“Divine the presence of the one who is like you!” the three of them had barked as one.
The pendant had immediately jerked sideways.
Eden’s mouth had gone dry. “Expand.”
The projection had shifted at her order, giving them a closer view of where the devilwood pendant was pointing.
It was the Eastern seaboard of the United States.
Eden had frowned. “Focus.”
The globe had blurred sickeningly before revealing details of a city.
Victor had straightened where he’d been leaning against the wall, surprise widening his eyes. “That’s Philadelphia.”
“Can we get a more detailed location?” Atropos had asked Eden stiffly.
Eden had nodded and furrowed her brow. The globe had blurred again and again until it got down to a two-hundred-foot-wide bird’s eye view of the city.
Her eyes had rounded. “Is that—?!”
A voice interrupted Eden’s recollection. “Excuse me.”
She blinked. A young man in a safari outfit was peering awkwardly at them.
“Would you mind stepping aside?” he said politely. “You’re blocking the entrance.”
“Oh.” Eden made a face. “Sorry. We were just admiring the architecture.”
The guy looked at her strangely. Eden cleared her throat.
“Let’s go,” she murmured to Loki and Kes.
The Reptile and Amphibian House of the Philadelphia Zoo looked pretty innocuous in the bright sunlight as they headed inside it. They negotiated a short flight of steps, pushed through another pair of glass doors, and were greeted by a wave of heat and a cacophony of excited voices.
A class of eager sixth graders practically packed the interior of the building.
“What are these human children doing here?” Kes asked warily.
Eden spotted several harried teachers trying to herd the kids into some kind of orderly queue. “By the looks of things, they’re on a field trip.”
Kes observed the kids with a critical frown. “They are very loud considering their size.”
“Look! A weird lady just came in!” someone said in a stage whisper.
Giggles broke out.
The Goddess’s scowling gaze swept the room. “Who said that?!”
Her voice rattled the glass boxes lining the walls. Some of the children paled.
Eden wished the ground would swallow her. “Come here!”
She grabbed the irate Goddess by the arm and dragged her and a smirking Loki farther inside, to where the devilwood staff was urging her to go.
They passed dozens of brightly lit displays featuring exotic reptiles and reached an immense enclosure occupying an alcove at the far end of the building.
