“Did your agency not give you the file or did you just choose not to read it?”
When I didn’t answer right away, she turned around with a huff, shaking her head. She was leading me back into the kitchen and, no doubt, to the front door if I didn’t stop her in time.
Shit.I needed to fix this.My mind ran through the numbers again, reminding me that I still needed this job.
“I needed you today.I can’t believe they fucked up this bad again.”
“I’m sorry, just tell me what I did wrong and I?—”
She turned around, her eyes ablaze with anger.I hated it.I didn't want to see this angry side of her.It hurt, but her next words hurt me even more.
“Her mother died in a car accident two months ago,” she growled.“I’m her aunt.”
Oh.I deflated a bit.Shit.I knew all too well what it felt like to lose your parents.Granted, I wasn't as young as Bella was when it happened, but it hurt nonetheless. And this was way too fresh.
Damn, I feel like an asshole.I’m being an asshole.
Last-minute or not, I should've read that file front to back before getting out of the car.
“I’m so sorry, I?—”
“You’re fired.”
She tried to turn away from me, but I caught her suit jacket—and the grimace when she looked at where we were connected.
“Please, let me just try again,” I begged.“I’m good at what I do.I'm one of the top nannies at my agency. You can ask them if you don’t believe me, but I have a list of references and other families you can talk to.I promise I am the nanny you need, and I can help.”
There was a pause as if maybe she was actually considering what I was saying. Her eyes looked down from my eyes to my lips and then to where I still held her suit jacket.
“That’s left to be seen,” she said before tugging her clothes from my grip.
She turned back around, but this time, I scrambled to get in front of her and childishly held my arms out so she couldn't move.
“I need this job,” I confessed, trying to add every bit of desperation I could to my voice.“Please let me try again.”
Her nostrils flared, anger lit up her face, and before I knew it, she was advancing on me fast and pushing me against the countertop. The hard stone dug into my back painfully, but none of that mattered because suddenly she was as close as I wanted her to be.
Stupid hope came alive in my chest.
“What happened to the million dollars then, huh?”
My heart dropped to my stomach.

“So you do know me.”
As if I could forget you.
I let out a scoff, my hand coming to trace the neckline of her dress.I shouldn’t be touching the nanny. But my hand had a mind of its own.I wanted my little angel back.I wanted her more than I'd wanted anyone else in my life.
And she was right there.Tempting me with what I couldn't have.
Maybe this was the universe getting back at me.Or teaching me a lesson by dangling everything I ever wanted right in front of me and watching as I struggled to keep my hands to myself.
“Biblically,” I spat.“The real question is why the fuck are you trying to infiltrate my life? Was my million dollars not enough for you?You have to get on my payroll as well?Or maybe you’re secretly in love with me.”
