We walk out into the humid summer air and I’m grateful to see the limo pull up a moment later.

The driver gets out and opens the door. “Where are we heading, sir?”

“The emergency room at Mass General.”

Jack scoffs. “It’s not an emergency. I’ve got the number to my mother’s plastic surgeon. We could just call—” His words break off as he leans against the seat, passing out.

Diane lets out a cry and tears fall down her cheeks.

I breathe in, patting her back. “He’ll be all right. We’ll get him to the hospital and all stitched up.”

Glancing down, I notice blood on the strange diamond bracelet. It has several sections of points that stand out from it, reminding me of a classier biker accessory.

“Did this hit his head?” I ask, pointing to it.

She pauses her tears for a moment before crying even louder at the sight of the blood. “I hurt him. How did I hurt him?”

Jack opens his eyes and frowns but closes them again once Diane turns toward him.

Miles shares a concerned look with me and I shake my head. Nothing like a little drama to add to my first event. More like a little drama with the addition of fiancé added to my name.

But there are some good things here.

I didn’t fall and make a scene.

I know a little more about Miles’s ex.

We left before I fell.

I only have like eight more events to attend with Miles. Let’s just hope they don’t all end with a trip to the hospital.

CHAPTER17

Miles

How did the night get so messed up in such a short amount of time?

I watch as Dani works to comfort Diane, just like she did for me when we first got there. She didn’t belittle me and tell me to get over it, that people were watching everything I did. She’d taken the time to talk me through it.

And then Tanya had to show up. What was I thinking in dating the woman in the first place? And what short circuit had caused me to call Dani my fiancé?

Probably the fact that Tanya had used me to get exactly what and who she wanted. And my mother is still falling for her crap. Rubbing it in and seeing the look on her face when I lied about an engagement was rather satisfying.

And yet that elation has worn off on our way to the hospital. Of all the bizarre things Jack has done, I didn’t see this one coming. But why had he not admitted that Diane was the one who cut him with her razor blade-like bracelet? He doesn’t have plans for a future with her, especially after this.

Dani sits next to me, just going along with the crazy train over here and I’ll have to remember to thank her a million times over after our journey together is through.

The driver pulls up to the hospital emergency room and we all pile out of the limo.

“I’ll call you when we need a ride back home,” I say to him through the window. He nods and pulls out of the drive.

“You guys don’t need to be here,” Jack says, the napkins in his hand a bright red.

Dani steps up next to me and says, “We’re not dumping you here and heading home.” She glances up and her whole body stiffens.

I want to question her about it, but one look at the lobby and I know we’re going to be here for a while.

Jack shakes his head and steps back toward the main door. “There’s got to be an urgent care or something open, right?”
