Jack covered his mouth with his hand, trying to hide a smile. “I’m really sorry.”

“It’s exactly why we weren’t long term compatible.” It took me entirely too long to see it.

“I just...how did you wind up with someone who doesn’t fly?” He kept trying to hide his grin.

“I was too busy running away from you to pay attention to obvious details, apparently.” I focused on the stuff I needed at the time. Kindness, attention, calm. “Mistakes were made.”

“Mistakes were made.”

The dance party raged. The music volume seemed to be getting louder by the hour. And even though I enjoyed dancing earlier, I was also enjoying this slow walk around the square.

Until the spotlight clicked on. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” There, right above our heads...was mistletoe.

“Is this a new one?” Jack glanced from the dangling ornament to me.

“It’s one of the rotating spotlights.” And my new nemesis. I swallowed hard.

“We didn’t break the rules last time.”

His gaze was so intense I couldn’t breathe. “No.”

“We probably shouldn’t do it again.”

“Probably not.” And I probably shouldn’t want this kiss as desperately as I did. But everyone thought we belonged together. Maybe we did.

So when Jack stepped up to me and brushed his large hand over my cheek, I closed my eyes and waited.

Chapter 16

Third time’s the charm

Jack

Holy shit, this is happening! Fate, destiny, karma, whatever it was that gave me this moment, thank you.I wanted to grab her, and kiss her, and never let her go. But I wanted her to feel the earth move and then after, choose to stay with me. So I had to do it right.

I kissed her lips softly. And she kissed me back.

I slid my other hand against her other cheek. And she whimpered.

I cocked my head to the right. And she opened her lips.

It was all chaos after that. Tongues and hair tugging and moaning. I hope her world turned upside down because mine was smashed to smithereens. My body a livewire, energized and dangerous.

I pulled back and she chased me.

Chased. Me.

Grabbed my wrists and crashed her lips into mine. “Don’t stop.”

I was not about to argue with that. In fact, no arguments ever again. She pressed her body against mine and I wrapped my arms around her. Delicate. Mine. We couldn’t get close enough.

The spotlight clicked off, leaving us alone in the darkness.

“Berlin,” I whispered between kisses.

“What?” she whispered back.

“What are we doing?”
