“You’re going to be a mama, Rainy-Bear,” Lexie whispers in my ear. I don’t have to turn around to know she has a big smile on her face. I can hear it, and it makes me smile even when I’m not sure I’m happy about all of this yet.

“Dr. Winslow, one of our patients called, trying to get her friend in today, and all the other doctors are booked up. Do you think you’d be able to work her in?”
I want to roll my eyes at her. Barbara knows I have a lighter caseload since I’m a new doctor here at the practice. If anyone can take on a new patient, it’s me.
Looking up from my computer, I’m met with her soft smile and kind eyes. No one can say no to Barbara. She’s like everyone’s sweet old grandma around here. “Work her in.”
“Thank you, Dr. Winslow,” she coos as she closes my office door. Not even a minute later, my computer pings with a new appointment. My stomach rumbles as if it knows I’ll be missing lunch since Barbara has me scheduled until four.
I hit the intercom and don’t wait to hear who answers. “Is it too late to order lunch?”
“Not at all, Dr. Winslow. I can pick yours up when I go out to get the others.”
I cock my head at the voice. Did we get another new girl? I swear this place is cursed. No one stays here for long, not even the doctors. Why? I’m not sure, but I’m sure it won’t be long before I figure it out. Maybe that’s just the way it is here in LA, or maybe they can’t take the pressure or the financial strain of living here and move on. All I know is this isn’t how it’s done in my hometown of Fairlane, Missouri.
“Great. I’ll take my usual.” Before she can respond back, I end the call and pull up my next patient and look over her lab results. She’s a high-risk patient that was put on my service after a few complications. So far, everything looks good, which should make her visit short and sweet. Should being the optimal word.
I guess I shouldn’t have counted my chickens before they hatched. My patient’s appointment ran long, and now I’m shoveling in my lunch like it’s my first meal in a month. I’m still chewing as I pick up the file off the side of the door. I like to be prepared, and as I open the door to my new patient, I’m not. I don’t even know her name.
Opening the file, I read the name at the top. Raine Storm. My first thought is her parents must have been hippies to give her a name like that.
Swallowing the last of my lunch, I clear my throat before I greet my new patient. “Good afternoon, Raine. I’m Dr. Winslow, and I’ll…” My tongue gets caught in my mouth when I look up to see the woman I met a couple of months ago. The woman I brought home and then she snuck out of my house before I woke up.
“Isn’t that the guy from—” her blue-haired friend starts but is cut off by Raine.
“What are you doing here?” Raine asks, clutching the paper sheet to her chest.
“This is where I work. I’m a doctor here. What are you doing here?” I ask, even though it’s obvious since I’m an obstetrician and she’s a patient.
“I… I’m…”
“She’s felt sick and took a home pregnancy test that came back positive and is here to confirm the results,” the woman, who I now remember is named Lexie, says. Her eyes roam over me, assessing me. She turns away like I failed a test I didn’t know I was taking.
“Is there any way I can see someone else?” Raine squeaks out.
I wish there was someone else.
“Unfortunately, no. The other doctors here don’t have room for any new patients. I’m what you get unless you want to find a new practice.”
Raine looks at Lexie with pleading eyes.
Her friend moves to stand next to Raine and grips her hand. “Can you at least tell us her results? I mean, if by chance she’s not pregnant, then it won’t matter, and if she is, I can help her find a… better fit.”
“I can assure you I am quite qualified to be your doctor, but I understand if you’d rather have someone different. Let me look here and see what the test results are.” I scan through all the information and find her HCG levels, indicating Raine is indeed pregnant.
Clearing my throat, I give my best fake smile, unsure how I feel about this news. Does Raine sleep around? She has to if she’s pregnant. It’s only been two months since our night together. A night where I didn’t use a condom. Fuck, did she give me an STD?
Narrowing my eyes at Raine, I try to speak in a voice that doesn’t convey all that I’m thinking at the moment. “Congratulations, you’re pregnant.”
Raine’s face falls, and I know I failed in my attempt to not sound like an asshole as I said those three words. I can’t help it, though. I’ve never been in a situation where my new patient is someone I’ve slept with—and not that long ago.
That night, I got the vibe Raine was sweet and innocent, even if she was a wildcat in bed. Maybe my instincts are failing me now that I’m in LA. It seems no one here is as good as they seem.
“Yeah,” Lexie draws out the word. “I think we’ll be finding someone else who isn’t an asshole to be her doctor.”
