“I don’t know what I believe. I thought what we had was real, but I think I was just deluding myself. I’m nowhere near in your league. If I hadn’t gotten pregnant with your baby, you would have never looked at me twice.”
“Rainbow, that’s not true, and you know it. When I woke up alone, I was so disappointed when I thought I’d never see you again. I want you in my life, and it has nothing to do with you carrying my child. It has everything to do with you.” He leans his forehead on the side of my head. “Please come inside, so we can talk. I—”
“Kade,” the woman named Mandy calls from the front door. “Come back inside.”
Kade growls and turns to look at her over his shoulder. “Woman, how many times have I told you, you need to leave?”
I take that moment to slip inside my car and start it up. Putting it into reverse, I jump as a loud noise echoes through my car. My gaze shoots up to see Kade is leaning his forehead against my window and his hands are on the roof of my car.
“Raine, please don’t go,” he closes his eyes.
“I can’t do this, Kade. What would you think if you showed up to stay with me for the weekend and walked in on a man holding me in his arms? If you care for me at all, just let me go.”
Squatting down, he looks me in the eye. “I’ll let you go for now, butifI found you in someone else’s arms, I’d like to think I’d listen to you and believe you.”
How can I believe him, though? No woman travels this far without a serious relationship.
“I just need time, Kade. My heart is…” a sob breaks free. “I’ve got to go.”
Letting my foot off the brake, I slowly start to back up. Taking a deep breath, I let it out slowly as I put my car into drive and try not to think about what just happened only five minutes ago. My sole focus is on driving as safely as possible and getting to Lexie’s house.
A few tears escape as I drive through LA’s traffic and then park beside Lexie and Ryder’s cars.
Grabbing my weekend bag that was meant for Kade’s, I get out of my car and head to Lexie’s front door on shaky legs. The pain in my chest is becoming too hard to contain, and I know in a matter of minutes, I’m going to break apart.
The door swings open, with Ryder standing there with a concerned expression on his handsome face.
“Lex, you need to get down here,” he yells up the stairs. He turns back to me and asks. “Do I need to kick anyone’s ass?”
“I just might take you up on the offer, but for now, let me sleep on it,” I whisper.
Lexie comes bounding down the stairs, takes one look at me, and holds her arms out. “Oh, Rainy-Bear.” I immediately fall into her arms as a torrent of tears starts to fall. “What happened?”
“I found Kade with another woman,” I cry into her chest. “I didn’t want to go back to my apartment because I’m afraid he’ll show up, and I just can’t see him right now. Lexie. I just can’t. I feel like my heart is being ripped out of my chest.”
“You can stay here. You know that. You never have to ask. Use the bedroom we use for shoots,” she ushers me further inside and then sets the alarm. “Do you want to talk about it?”
“Not really. Would you care if I just went and laid down to cry myself to sleep?” I sniff.
“No, of course not, sweetie. You do whatever you have to do, and I’ll be here whenever you need me.” She runs her hand down my hair and then gives me a squeeze. “I’ll be upstairs.”
Trudging into the fake bedroom Lexie has for photoshoots, I grab a blanket and pillow from the closet and curl up on the bed, where I cry for the rest of the night.
