Right next to me on the couch, Zane did a couple of lines like it was nothing. I was tempted to check the time because I could tell that this night could easily go left. He’d been acting like he had at least a little sense so far, but I knew things could quickly change, especially when there were drugs involved.

“Um, can I use your bathroom?”

“Feeling sick again or that ginger ale catching up with you?” he quizzed, looking up from the table.

“A combination of both I think.”

“Let me show you the way,” he said, standing and reaching for my hand.

With Zane’s help, I stood and followed him down a long hall to a bathroom.

“Thank you,” I said, releasing his hand before going inside.

“I’ll hold that for you,” he said, snatching my purse before I could close the door.

My heart drummed in my ears thinking about him searching through my purse and finding Psalm’s device.

“No, thank you. I got it,” I said, trying to take my purse back from him.

“Damn, I was just joking.” He grinned. “I know better than to touch a woman’s purse. My grandma would kill me.”

“Mine too,” I said, laughing nervously before slamming the door in his face.

Once I was safely behind the door, I pulled out my phone to check the time. I had been there a little over thirty minutes. I could make it another hour and a half if we stuck to watching the movie. I put my bag on the counter and turned on the water. For some reason, when I was in tense situations my bladder got shy. I had to run water to make myself pee.

While I was staked out in the bathroom, I couldn’t stop thinking about Liam. Soon, this would all be over, and we could be together without anyone standing in our way. If my family couldn’t accept it, then they couldn’t be in my life. That was the bottom line. I picked my phone up from the counter and sent him a message.

Me:I love you, Lee Lee. This will all be over soon. I promise.

As soon as I pressed send the bathroom door flew open.

“What the hell are you doing in here? Calling your goons to come ambush me?” Zane asked. His eyes were wild and red as he stalked toward me. “I knew something wasn’t right.”

“No. Why would I do that?” I questioned.

Ignoring my question, he snatched my phone. He tossed it back on the counter before yanking me up by the arm.

“I know you’re looking for a way out of this, but I’m sure your little friend told you I have a video of him killing Rod. There’s no way out of this.”

“I’m not looking for anything. We have a deal, right?”

“Yeah, I been wondering why your folks took it so easily. They have been known to wreak havoc on anyone trying to stand against them. What made them give up their princess? You know how many times I talked to Bishop about giving me a chance with you? I don’t because I lost count. He always said you were off limits. Now, all of a sudden, you’re at my house in the middle of the night with no fucking security. You don’t think that’s odd to me?”

“I don’t know what to tell you. You should have come to me if you wanted to date me. Bishop is not my father.”

“Yet, you wouldn’t be here right now if he hadn’t told you that you had to do it for the family. The pretty princess turned prostitute…that should be a movie. You know that would be a best seller.” He cackled.

“If you want me to leave, I’ll call someone to pick me up,” I said, reaching for my phone.

I wasn’t quick enough, and Zane snatched it up before I could reach it.

“You’re not calling anyone to my fucking house.”

“Can I at least pee in peace?” I quizzed.

“You’re not doing that either. See you might think I’m stupid, but when you offered to come over, I got to thinking. Why the hell would you want to come to my house after all this time? You hate my guts.”

“Because I thought we were making progress,” I said, trying to reason with him.
