“Syre, man, I’m telling you something is off. I can feel it. I’m going crazy right now. I don’t know what I would do if something happened to her. I need to make sure she’s OK. I need her. You know I do, man. I don’t have to tell you that shit, Syre. I know you know how that is.”

“I know you feel like she’s your responsibility, but I’ll make sure she’s good. She’s working on something.”

“Something like fucking what?” I asked him.

“She’s at Whitmore’s trying to stay there long enough for Psalm to disable their security encryption or something like that.”

Hearing that, I dashed out of Divine’s house nearly slamming the door off the hinges as I left.

“Something’s not right. I’m telling you. I’m going over there.”

“She wanted to do it, Liam. Our girl can handle herself a little better than we give her credit for. Stand down.”

“Fuck standing down. I’m going to get her.”

“Liam, listen to me, man. Psalm is supposed to hit me up as soon as he gets through.”

“I hear what you’re saying, but she’s carrying my child. I can’t wait around.”

“Fuck,” he muttered before I heard a bunch of shuffling on the other end. “This time, I actually hope she’s not answering the phone because she’s getting fucked again.”

“I hate to say it, but I’m almost thinking the same thing.”

“I didn’t like this plan in the first fucking place. You’re closer to her than me. Don’t let nothing happen to my baby girl, Liam. If she dies, you better take your last breath first. I’m on my way.”

He hung up the phone, but it didn’t matter. We were on the same page. I was already speeding down the freeway trying to get to Whitmore’s house. It wasn’t that I felt like Divine was cheating on me or doing anything crazy. Divine was in trouble. I could feel it. Even if she wasn’t, she would be safer in my arms. I didn’t trust fucking Zane Whitmore. I couldn’t wait to piss on his corpse.

My stomach fell through my ass when I pulled up to Zane’s house and saw that it was pitch dark. It wasn’t normal dark like they were gone to bed. There were no outside lights on when I slung my truck up in front of the door.

My gut told me that something was wrong. I didn’t turn my truck off before I jumped out and sprinted to the door. I pounded on the door with my fist and waited for a beat for aresponse. When I didn’t hear anything coming from inside, I stepped back and picked up one of the bricks from the garden to bust the glass out of the door.

Putting my hand through the broken glass, I unlocked then opened the door from the inside. The stillness in the house sent a chill down my spine. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called Divine again. I heard her phone ringing, so I took off through the house following the sound.

“Divine!” I called as I ran through the house like a mad man.

Her lack of response was making me crazy. Where the fuck was she? It was dark as hell, but I could see well enough to move through the house. I held the phone to my ear until the voicemail picked up. Growling under my breath, I called her again.

“Aye, man! You found her!” Syre called from somewhere in the house.

“Fuck no! I’m calling her phone, and it’s ringing somewhere in the house,” I said, stopping in front of an open bathroom when I heard her phone ringing from inside. I shook my head and walked into the bathroom to get her phone. A lump formed in my throat as I ended the call from my own phone.

“Liam!” Syre called.

I stepped out of the bathroom and saw Syre coming down the hall.

“I found the phone, but they’re not here,” I told him.

He didn’t respond as he pulled out his phone and called someone on speaker.

“Yeah.”

“Psalm, Divine and Whitmore are gone. Me and Lee are in his house right now.”

“Fuck y’all doing there, Syre!”

“It’s a good thing we came. They’re fucking gone. Aren’t you supposed to be able to tell that?”

“According to her phone, she’s still there. I been working through these files. My system killed the power in his house.”
