“Whose farm is this? Is this some of Bishop’s shit?” she questioned.

I didn’t know, and I didn’t bother to answer as I led the way inside the barn. The stench of the hogs must have masked the smell of Zane pissing on himself for the past two days. There he sat with his head slumped and pants saturated with urine. Walking right over to him, I punched him so hard the chair turned over. Coughing and cursing, he came to.

“Wake the fuck up, nigga. I told you I wanted you to see me coming.”

“Fuck you, man!”

“You know I told myself I couldn’t wait to piss on your dead body, but I see you beat me to the punch,” I taunted him.

“Yeah, and when they find out something happened to me, who do you think is going to the be the number one suspect in Sherrod’s murder? Those videos will be in the right hands by nightfall.”

“I said I wanted to take my time killing you, but I can’t put my lady through all that shit. So, I’ll have mercy on you and make it quick.”

His eyes shot to Divine before narrowing into slits. “You bitch!”

“Uh uh uhn. Don’t talk to the mother of my child that way. I heard you tried to hurt my unborn. Now, I’m reconsidering all that mercy I was just talking about,” I said, walking over and grabbing a pitchfork from the wall. I didn’t stop moving until I was standing over him.

“Liam, just kill him and get it over with. I can’t stand the sound of his voice any longer,” Divine requested.

“You low down evil bitch. You started all of this shit!” Zane roared.

Raising the pitchfork, I brought it down until the prongs pierced his abdomen. I ripped it out of him before spearing him with it again and again. The baying from the pigs did little to drown out his screams. Still, I wasn’t satisfied. Throwing the pitchfork aside, I kicked him in the face until it was so bloody that I couldn’t recognize him.

“Divine!” Her voice brought me out of a trance. I looked back to see a look of horror on my baby’s face. “That’s enough, Lee. Just kill him now.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you,” I said, walking over and kissing the top of her head.

“I’m not scared. It’s just—” She shuddered. “Shoot him and get it over with.”

Turning back to look at him, I removed my gun from my waistband and shot him twice in the chest.

“Go to the car, baby. I’m going to move him and clean myself up before I get back in the car.”

“OK.”

Once Divine was out of sight, I drug Zane’s lifeless body over and heaved it over into the pin with the hogs. If he wasn’t dead now, they would finish him off. I cleaned and scrubbed my face and hands and took off my shirt and shoes, tossing them onto the fire pit. I doused them with lighter fluid and used the matches to set them on fire. Now that I was done taking out the trash, it was time to live happily ever after with my baby.

Epilogue

Divine

The sound of my big brother singing “For You” by Kenny Lattimore was my cue. The butterflies in my stomach were good ones. Tears sprang to my eyes, threatening to ruin my makeup, but I didn’t care. I put my hand on my little bump and prayed over my growing bundle of joy.

“Daddy’s waiting on the other side of that door,” I mumbled.

“Sis, this is your last chance to bail,” Syre said, walking over and squeezing my hand.

“Thank you, but I’m ready to do this.”

“Just saying. I would have got you out of here. You know that,” he said before proceeding for the door.

When he opened the door, my knees almost gave out. I was about to marry the man of my dreams. Who was I kidding? I couldn’t have created Liam from my wildest dreams. He looked so good in an all-white three-piece tux. When Liam used the back of his hand to dab his eyes, I wanted to run to him. We were really doing this. I didn’t try to fight back the tears that moistened my cheeks as Syre delivered me to my future husband.

He must had noticed my tears, because Liam stepped off his post and met me and Syre a few feet away from where he was supposed to stand.

“How do you get prettier every day, Cookie?” Liam asked, brushing a curl back from my face and kissing my lips.

“Damn, can I give her to you first, bro? This ain’t how this supposed to go,” Syre fussed, causing the handful of people in attendance to laugh.
