Ihadworn it for him.
A slow heat crept into my cheeks.
Mars raised her glass slightly. “Vita Nova?”
Darius smiled. “Still one of my favorites.”
He glanced at Kendra with polite acknowledgment before turning back to me. “Malcolm mentioned you’ve taken lead on a few new files. If you need anything from me—or from him—just say the word.”
“I appreciate that,” I said, steadying my voice, though my mind was moving in too many directions to count.
He gave me a brief nod, warm but unreadable. Then he exited, the scent of expensive cologne trailing in his wake.
Kendra was already stiff again, clearly unamused at how completely she’d been sidelined.
Mars turned back to her. “Door’s right there. You can use it now.”
Kendra’s nostrils flared, but she said nothing. Just turned and walked out without another word.
Once she was gone, Mars sighed and flopped back into the guest chair. “Whew. If that was any more awkward, I’d have to charge you for a front-row seat.”
But I barely heard her.
My eyes had drifted back to the screen.
Back to the email from Mr. Caldwell.
Back to the reminder that I was being watched.
Wanted.
And possibly... already in too deep.
Once the door closed and peace returned to my office, I exhaled—long and slow.
Mars was still seated, sipping what was left of her wine, but her eyes flicked toward me with a smirk. “You look like you just survived two cross-examinations and a surprise pap smear.”
I didn’t even have the energy to respond.
Instead, I turned back to my screen, clickedreply, and let my fingers hover over the keys.
I typed:
Mr. Caldwell?—
Thank you for sending the documents so promptly.
Regarding your earlier comments, I would prefer we keep communication—both written and in-person—strictly professional going forward.
I understand you're thorough, but I’d appreciate it if future communication regarding my habits remained relevant to your legal affairs.
Best,
Zoe Davis
I read it once.
Then again.
