“And didn’t say shit.”

“I didn’t think a response was required.”

He scoffed. “You act like I sent a damn invoice. That attachment was business but the message was for you, Zoe.”

I walked to the door and closed it slow, my pulse pounding in my ears.

“No, this is strictly business,” I murmured.

“I kissed you and you kissed me back.”

“If this call isn't pertaining to your residential properties, I'm going to end right here.” I was bluffing and hearing myself talk only made my heartbeat quicken. I needed to be a woman of my word and hang up, but I couldn't.

“I can still taste you.”

I closed my eyes. That kiss was still sitting on my lips like it happened five minutes ago. My legs clenched as I relived that moment.

Silence stretched thick between us.

He spoke again, calm but sharp. “I shoulda let you talk first. Might’ve peeped how much game you really got.”

Mars wasn't wrong. Had I replied, he wouldn't clocked me immediately.

“I don’t play games.”

“You do. But I ain’t call for that.”

I sat down, exhaling through my nose. “Then why are you calling?”

“Because I’m not done with you.”

My throat tightened.

“You feel it too,” he said. “You just scared to admit it.”

I didn’t answer. Couldn’t. Mars’s voice slid through my head like smoke:Don’t jump when he calls. Let him wonder. Let him want it more.

But this didn’t feel like a game anymore.

“You free tonight?” he asked. His voice dropped, slow and deep like a dare.

“That depends.”

“Zoe.”

“What?”

“Cut that lawyer shit. You want this just like I do.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t.”

“Then stop running. I’ll send a car.”

“I didn’t say yes.”

“You will.”

I smirked, even though I tried not to. “And if I don’t?”
