The wind is knocked out of my lungs.
My lips part, but no sound comes out.
The offer letter and the contract I signed withSahara Timesstare back at me.
“I have copies,” Nathan says.
I wrench my gaze to his. “You went through my things!”
“You’re one to talk, little spy.”
I clench my teeth.
Inside, I’m breaking into pieces.
He smiles victoriously, basking in my misery. “My brother may forgive you for stalking him, but betraying his trust by working as an informant at his company and ruining his reputation? He would never forgive you for that.”
“I will never forgive you for this.”
“A small price to pay.”
Chapter Fifty-Four
Kian
My willpower stays strong for less than an hour before I’m driving back home around ten from my club.
Even Zain had taken notice of my darkening mood and gave me a wide berth.
As the elevator rides up to my floor, I wonder how Iris’s conversation went with Nathan. She must’ve finished talking to him by now.
Did he listen to her?
Is she all right?
I hadn’t wanted her to do this alone, but a soft ‘please’ from her, and I was a goner.
I understood it was something she needed to do on her own. God knows, it wouldn’t have gone well had I been in the same room. Nathan’s spiteful nature would’ve won.
Aware I would’ve crashed into their apartment if I stayed home, I went to The Mirage, hoping work would distract me. AllI did was keep glancing at my phone, checking for a text from Iris.
The ding announces my arrival.
Striding toward her apartment, I send her a text.
ME: Is he gone? I’m outside your door, rainbow.
Several minutes pass, the text remains unseen.
My unease grows.
I hadn’t seen any car parked in the spot reserved for guests. I take a risk and rap my knuckle on her door.
The unease turns into a pit when the door just gives way, creaking open into a dark hallway. My feet carry me inside of their own volition.
No loud Spanish music plays.
No soft laughter.
