I freeze.
That was almost deep from Zachs.
And I don’t know what to do with it.
Chapter Two
Zachs
Damn.
Didn’t think Dax was serious.
I mean, for me? Easy hell yes.
But her? A woman like her with a man like me?
Yeah. Hell no.
She’s staring at me now, lips tight, eyes sharp. Thinking. Processing.
Is she considering it?
She closes her eyes for a beat, like she’s trying to clear her head. Then she turns.
That ass.
Dax has lost his ever-loving mind.
I follow her to the file room. She knows I’m here, but doesn’t tell me to fuck off. That’s… something.
She’s pissed. Still pissed. And underneath that? She’s hurt.
I don’t know how to handle that.
I know how to handle rage. Fear. Begging.
This? This is new.
She flicks through a paper in her hand before stepping to the filing cabinets, scanning the rows.
“Who you hunting?” I lean against the cabinet, watching her fingers skim over the labels. “I can tell you more than you’ll find in those files.”
She doesn’t look at me. Doesn’t want to look at me.
“It ain’t the cons you gotta worry about, though.”
That gets me a glance. A flicker of something in her eyes.
“I want everyone’s files,” she says. “Pull the employee files on the guards, since you know who is who. I’ll search for the inmates.”
My grin fades.
Son of a bitch.
She doesn’t know. Dax didn’t tell her?
The whole island knows. Every man in this prison knows. And Faith.
