"Sarah, thank you for thinking of clothes, for helping me feel a little more human. And for Grams, you went in the ambulance with her. I don't have the words but you are a true friend and I love you." Isla said a tear slipped down her cheek. Sarah grabbed Isla into a tight hug, her voice thick with tears as she replied.
"Yeah, well don't ever scare me like that again or we're breaking up. Now c'mon I heard Grams is demanding our presence now that she's allowed guests." Sarah chided, dragging a sharp laugh out of both of us.
I followed behind the two women as they walked arm in arm toward Grams hospital room. Gram's voice drifted over to me. A nurse stopped me as I was about to enter.
"Only two visitors allowed at once." I nodded in understanding and Sarah popped her head out, ready to give the nurse a talking to.
"Sarah, it's okay. You and Isla stay with Grams, I'll wait with her family. This way I can come get you as soon as we get news about Wes."
"You sure?" She asked, concern evident on her face.
"Absolutely, make sure Grams knows I was banished otherwise I would be in there, and I'll be by as soon as your coven meeting is over." I winked, trying to lighten the mood but was shocked to see tears once again form in Sarah's eyes. She came over andgave me a hug.
"You're a good man Myles Bennett. I'll let Isla and Gram's know where you are."
"Thanks, Sair. I'll be back as soon as I hear anything." She nodded before returning to Grams and Isla.
I took joy in hearing their laughter as I walked back towards the waiting room. I was making my way towards the area of seats Isla's family had gathered at when a man's gasp caught my attention. I looked up in shock to see Jonathan standing there, staring at me. What was he doing here? I changed direction and headed straight for him. The blood rushed to my head making it so I couldn't hear any of the words coming out of his mouth. Not that I cared about what he had to say, and it wasn't a concern after my fist connected with his face.
Jonathan
What were these overgrown apes thinking? I was sitting at the table minding my own business, taking advantage of the free booze and trying to avoid conversation with anyone. Out of nowhere I was swarmed by a bunch of rent-a-cops and bullied into some back office. No one would tell me anything, I wasn't allowed to leave and I was starting to get nervous.
After what felt like hours, the door slammed open. I was reluctant to admit it had me jumping in my seat. An oaf of a man came stalking in with my boss Martin behind him. I tried to stand up but all the alcohol caught up to me and I wobbled before righting myself.
"What's going on? Why do you have me locked up in here?" I demanded.
"What's going on here is you didn't keep your ho on a leash. She attacked Isla and her Grams, ended up stabbing her ownfucking brother." I collapsed, the desk behind me the only thing keeping me upright.
"Is Isla alright? What happened? Where is she?" I asked.
"That doesn't matter to you." He sneered before we were both interrupted by Martin clearing his throat.
"I am so sorry to hear about Isla, but can I ask what this has to do with me?" Martin asked looking, increasingly uncomfortable.
"Well one of your employees, Alyssa, is in police custody for attempted murder. Meanwhile, your other employee Johnny right here broke your firm's no fraternization policy with a subordinate. In addition we have evidence of him taking drugs and using company funds for personal use. If that's not reason enough to get him fired, then I'll have to look into what sort of firm you're running over there. I will take him down, and anyone that stands in the way." He said, pinning both Martin and I with a look so full of malice I was taken aback.
"Well, uh yes this just came to light tonight. I'll have HR do a thorough review and I will personally contact the Bar Association as soon as possible. We need to handle the process through the formal channels but I don't see a future where Jonathan or Alyssa will stay at the firm, or get a job anywhere else once we're finished with the investigation. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get my wife home." Martin replied, clearly uncomfortable and eager to escape the room.
I didn't even have it in me to worry about that, all I heard was Isla in the hospital. I had to get to her. I had to make sure she was ok. I was still stuck in my own head when Martin left, and almost missed the giant exiting behind him.
"Hey! Wait, where is Isla? What hospital? You never told meif she's okay!" I yelled, grabbing his arm. In a flash he had his hand around my throat and I was lifted against a wall, I couldn't breath and my toes barely touched the ground.
"You should be asking different questions. Where's Alyssa? How is the baby? Where are those questions huh?" He asked.
Color drained from my face, how did he know about the pregnancy? Who was this guy?
"Who the hell are you? Put me down right now. I need to go check on my wife." I asked with as much authority as I could muster.
"EX wife. My name is Sully and you better fucking remember it. I will haunt you and that miserable cunt for the rest of your pathetic lives. This sad rendition of playing house with Alyssa ends now. Forget Isla, pack your shit and get out of town. You go anywhere near that hospital and you'll regret it." Sully replied through clenched teeth demonstrating the violence he was barely restraining.
"What about Alyssa? Is she in jail? What happens to the baby?" I asked, as my world was further engulfed by chaos.
"There is no baby you fool! She set you up, played you like the ass you are. Now get the fuck out of my sight." He said shoving me out of the office before frog-marching me out of the hotel.
He literally pushed me to the curb with a word warning security to refuse me entry. The valet refused to give me my keys when I stumbled towards him and I reluctantly called an Uber and had it take me to the nearest hospital. Isla had to be close, there were only 3 hospitals in a 100 miles radius she had to be at one of them.
The first hospital was a bust. After I had run around frantically trying to see if Isla was there I managed to sober up a bit.I used that rare moment of common sense to call the other two hospitals and was finally able to confirm which location she was at. I was grateful I still remembered all of Isla's information and that the nurse who answered didn't question the status of our marriage, as Isla's husband I was given the confirmation I needed.
