She spent the rest of the day casting warding spells on the outside of the ruins so that no dark magic could find them or hurt anyone inside. The spells wouldn’t last forever, but they would suffice for now.

Dain and the brotherhood once again returned for dinner. She sat next to Dain, their legs touching, the love she felt for him almost overwhelming.

“Do you feel like a walk?” Dain asked when they were done eating.

She nodded. “I do.”

They walked into the woods, holding hands. The moon was just a splinter, but the stars lit up the area brilliantly. A cool breeze brushed over them.

A comfortable silence fell on them. Seraphina’s stomach fluttered with butterflies as his scent wafted over her, filling her senses.

They stopped near the creek and Dain cupped her face. His thumb traced over her cheekbone, sending a shiver flowing through her.

Her breath caught as she looked into his stormy blue eyes that shone with hunger and want.

He lowered his head and she moaned as he pressed his lips gently against hers. She wrapped her arms around him and melted into the kiss.

The kiss deepened, hungry and fierce. He slid his hand to the small of her back, holding her against him. She moaned from the ache in her belly that spread throughout her body. The fires exploded inside of her and she wanted more than anything to feel him inside of her, their bodies moving together until that earth-shattering climax.

At that moment everything in the world disappeared—the creek, the curse, and the war. There was only them standing together, holding onto each other for dear life.

His lips moved against hers with a tenderness that contradicted the storm in his eyes. She was lost in the sensations of the softness of his lips, the roughness of his stubble against her face, and their breaths mingling together.

He tasted like a storm and mint and the scent branded itself into her soul. Their tongues danced together.

Seraphina wrapped her arms around his neck, and he pulled her closer to him. She made a soft sound mewling sound in the back of her throat as the familiar inferno built inside of her.

She had no idea how long the kiss lasted and was disappointed when he pulled away. He pressed his forehead against hers and whispered, “Seraphina.”

After a moment, he held her hand and they walked back to the ruins, in silence, which spoke more than words ever could.

Seraphina knew that she loved him with all of her heart and soul. “I will find a way for us to be together without destroying him.”

Dain

The moonlight lit up the forest as Dain, Kael, Valon, Xander, Darius, and Cassion flew over the treetops searching for the supply train traveling toward Wyrmhaven. Xander dipped his wing when he spotted the lights on the wagons.

With a powerful beat of his wings, Dain descended and hid in the cover of the trees just ahead of the train, waiting for it to pass. They had scouted the area earlier and knew the clearing to their right would be the perfect place for an ambush.

The first wagon crept into view and they waited. When half of the train had passed by them, Dain gave the signal and they all leaped into the air, transforming mid-jump. The night erupted into chaos as the guards quickly shifted into their animal forms while the humans took cover.

Dain dove toward the first wagon, freezing the driver and guards. They fell to the ground as solid blocks of ice.

A sharp pain pierced his side. Dain roared loudly and whirled around to see a void dragon shifter. He’d shot a shadow spear through Dain’s scales. Dain shot a lightning bolt at the dragonshifter, but he ducked and the lightning hit a tree, splitting it in half.

The void dragon drew in a breath to shoot another arrow when Valon, a golden dragon, shot a sunfire lance through the enemy’s side. He immediately burst into an immense ball of ash, scattering over the wagons and trees.

Valon flew to a shadow dragon while Dain attacked an earth dragon shifter. He managed to freeze one of his wings just as the shifter raked his stone-like claws across Dain’s wound.

His vision narrowed and a dark red veil covered the world around him. The dragon’s figure was distorted into a grotesque creature. Roaring loudly, Dain attacked as rage and hatred completely filled him. He blew a steady stream of ice and lightning at the earth shifter and slashed with his claws. The enemy dragon was an icy block of shredded scales, skin, and blood that fell to the ground.

Dain dove toward the drivers and guards accompanying the train. His only focus was to destroy every being that existed within reach. He pounced on a man who leveled a gun at him about to shoot. Dain used his claws to rip the man’s flesh from his bones. The loud piercing scream was short-lived.

Whipping around, Dain focused on another figure—a young teenager who was likely one of the drivers—who was cowering under one of the wagons, eyes wide trembling with fear.

Kill him,the voice in his mind screamed.Destroy them all.
