Valon growled.

“I can’t leave yet. However, I promise you that when the time comes, if I must leave, I will. I love Dain, and I will do everything I have to do to protect him.”

“You’re making a mistake, Oracle. You will destroy him.”

His anger sent an icy shiver through her and her heart twisted. Valon hadn’t said anything she hadn’t already thought.

“I know you’re worried and so am I. You must understand that there’s no place I could go that Dain wouldn’t find me. We’re tied together. And, as I’ve said, there are other forcesat play.” She sighed. “I know you mean well and are trying to protect Dain. I won’t say anything to him about our conversation. There doesn’t need to be a rift between the two of you.”

Valon glared at her through narrowed eyes, pressed his lips together, and stormed away.

“I guess I have a new enemy,” Seraphina muttered to herself. “I don’t think he’ll hurt me, because he won’t shed blood unnecessarily, but I need to be careful.”

She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. This was going to get a lot worse before it got better.

Later that evening, Seraphina and Dain were sitting together under the stars. He was quiet and reflective so she sat with him in silence. Valon’s words echoed in her mind, so she closed her eyes and focused on Dain, looking into his soul. She could see the darkness spreading inside of him, like a spilled bottle of ink.

She hung her head and closed her eyes to push back the tears. Her stomach twisted into knots. Dain was suffering and there wasn’t anything she could do to stop it.

After a while, they walked to their tents and paused outside of hers. She looked into his eyes and her breath was swept away by the mixture of emotions—love, fear, and confusion mixed together.

“Dain, I…” She wanted to tell him how much he meant to her and that she’d fallen in love with him.

“Shsh.” He put his finger on her lips.

Her heart dropped. Either she’d misread his feelings and he didn’t feel the same or he was afraid that the words spoken aloud would make things worse. She understood.

He put his hands on both sides of her face and brushed his lips against hers before disappearing into his tent.

She crawled under the covers and closed her eyes. Seraphina wanted that man so badly. The aching need was a physical painand her heart felt as though it was caught in a vise. When sleep finally came, it was filled with dreams of them making love. Their bodies were entwined, as he filled her with his thick length, stretching her, caressing her inner silken walls.

“You feel so good inside of me. I never want this to end,” she whispered.

A low moan escaped from her lips as she dreamed about him gently squeezing her breasts and rubbing her nipples with his thumbs before he sucked them into his mouth, flicking them with his tongue.

Dain looked into her eyes. “You’re so beautiful. You’ve no idea how you make me feel.”

He reached down between her legs and rubbed the hard pebble. She started panting as the fire built up inside of her, consuming her.

“I feel like I’m coming apart and I can’t…” she breathed.

She arched her hips to meet his as he buried himself deeply in her core. Her body quivered, and her core pulsated against him. Seraphina cried out his name as he thrust hard and deep, throbbing inside of her, shooting his seed into her.

Her eyes flew open and she sucked in a gasping breath. The dream had been so real that she could still feel the warmth of his touch and the pressure of his body against hers.

“Now if only I could go back to sleep and dream that he’s holding me next to him all night.”

Unfortunately, such satisfying dreams didn’t come. In fact, she didn’t dream at all for the rest of the night.

She looked at him shyly during breakfast and a sexy grin crossed his face, and he winked at her. She wondered if he’d had the same dream or if she was simply giving off an energy that he understood. Seraphina was too shy to ask.

Kael approached as they were finishing their meal. “The guards have reported that some of Malakar’s scouts are getting close. Would you like me to take care of them?”

“We can destroy them so they can’t report back. It’ll also let Malakar know that we are fighting back,” Dain said, starting to stand.

Seraphina quickly put her hand on his arm. She was terrified that the more blood Dain spilled, the more quickly his darkness and madness would spread.

“There’s been enough blood spilled lately. I know sometimes, during war, it must be, but we should always choose another way, if possible,” she said pleadingly. “I can make the ruins invisible to their sight so they will return to Malakar and report that they were in this area, but neither of us were here and there was no sign of your army or followers.”
