“Checking the mail,” I tell him lamely.
“Same,” he mutters.
“Um hey random question. You wouldn't know of anywhere hiring, would you?”
“You good at answering phones and keeping track of money?”
“I’ll do anything at this point.”
“The freelance stuff not working out?”
“Nope.”
“Been busting my balls trying to get shit sorted at the office. My usual woman broke her hip, so I’ve been trying to manage it. I could use you at my storage rental office.”
“Yeah. Perfect. When can I start?”
“Where’s the little one?”
“Daycare.”
“You want to go now I’ll get you set up to start tomorrow.”
“Seriously?”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know. I thought maybe you’ve been avoiding me.”
“Babe, just busy. Job is yours if you want it.”
“Oh my God. Thank you.” I throw my arms around his neck and kiss his mouth. He freezes. “Shit. I’m sorry. I got excited and wanted to thank you.”
“Think I got that message, babe.” I drop my arms and he pinches his lips.
“Won't happen again. Totally not cool I know.”
“Be offended if it didn’t.”
“Oh.” Now I’m the one freezing but he doesn't push it. I want to ask if this will be weird for him. I don’t know where things stand between us. I won’t lie and say a part of me hasn’t been disappointed that he hasn’t been around. I thought maybe we were starting something.
“I’m in the cage today.”
“The what?”
“My truck. Got some units to clean out. You want to ride with me?”
“I’ll drive. I need to pick Lennon up later. Just let me get my keys.” I open my door and Hammie starts whistling.
“The hell is that?”
“Lennon’s piggie. Want to meet him? You can give him a treat.”
“I’ll pass but he doesn't like shit everywhere, does he?”
“Only in his cage. Come on.” I grab his hand and force him inside.
Ace steps into the living room. One of the perks that sold me on this rental was that it came furnished.
