Page 24 of Duty Became Desire

Shouldn’t you be working, Teach.

Study period for me. But the bell is about to ring. If you get any more ideas of how to solve this riddle, let me know.

I may have just the idea, but I’ll get back with you.

I sat my phone back down again, quickly getting the last dress on, and whistled to myself.

“If you don’t love this dress, Demi, I don’t care. I’m buying it and wearing it anyway.”

I stepped out, slowly turning around, and jumped at her grin.

“Girl, that is amazing on you. I’m also sure that Alec will gladly take his new bride and rip that dress off in a matter of seconds. You are hot!”

I flung my hair over my shoulder, posing just for her. She took a picture and sent it to both James and Alec.

“Okay, next stop,” she said, standing up.

“Hey, why don’t you all come down to my house this weekend? Party it up a small-town style. Laughlin’s casinos have two amazing clubs, ya know.”

“Sure, sounds fun.”

I watched her walk away to look at something else and then I went in to change, grabbing my phone once more.

Weekend trip to Laughlin. We’ll get them drunk, and they can spill their guts.

Evil and twisted, I’m in.

I laughed as I shoved the phone in my pocket. It was about time the truth came out.

Chapter fifteen

Alec

“Ican’t tell you the last time I came to Laughlin,” I told Skylar as she drove us from her house to the club at the casino.

“Do you even gamble?”

“No. I don’t do much at the casinos in Vegas, let alone come out here. But I know it’s quieter. And if nothing else, the Colorado river is awesome to watch on a full moon night.”

“That’s a sight I haven’t seen in a while. Between going to Vegas and work, my free time is always taken up with other stuff.”

I turned to look at her, ignoring the couple in the back seat that was making out.

“Why not just live in Vegas?”

“No way. I hate the city. I mean, I can stand it for a little while, but it would take something big and drastic for me to stay there for any length of time.”

“Hmm, like a husband?”

She shot me a side eye, but I couldn’t stop the chuckle that escaped. She was so easy to rile up, and I did enjoy it. Sure, there wasn’t as much fighting, a semi card of truce had been laid down, but I had no doubt that something could tip those scales right on over to us fighting again.

I was thinking she’d just shoot me down again, but even with that look, she just shrugged, her focus back on the task of driving.

“Maybe,” was her one-word answer, and I loved it.

“It’s insane how many bodies are in here,” I told her, shocked by all the people in the club; young and old alike.

“I know, want to get out of here?” she shouted back and all I could do was nod.
