Tonight, we might be safe, but tomorrow isn’t promised. Reaper Sons are likely picking up the pieces now, but it won’t be long before they’re trying to eat into us again, one surprise attack at a time.
“Our world,” I begin, kneeling down beside her and taking her hand, “is much more deadly than you think.”
Worry flashes across her eyes, her stare deepening. “What do you mean? What’s going on?” Another pressing thought popsinto her mind, removing even more blood from her face. “What if you guys are killed?”
“I’m not going to sugarcoat it for you, sweetheart—it’s a possibility.”
Melissa’s eyes widen with fear.
“That’s why we have to get you back home.”
She drops her shoulders, her head tilting toward the floor.
I catch her chin with my finger, tilting it back up so she’s forced to look into my eyes. “We shouldn’t have left our number for you and brought you back here. You’ve been exposed to too many horrors, and we apologize for that.”
Saying goodbye to her isn’t what I want to do, but it’s the most honorable decision.
Even though I barely know the girl, I wouldn’t have forgiven myself if something happened to her today. This isn’t just about the club anymore, about ignoring distraction and refusing to entertain women. This is about Melissa and her life. She’s a college student. Has her whole life ahead of her.
I don’t want to be the one responsible for destroying everything she has built.
This world was made for people like me. Not innocent princesses like her.
“What if I don’t want to go?”
My heartbeat spikes.
The devil really is trying to torment today.
I frown. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” she says, tightening her hand around mine. “That I want to stay. Just a little bit longer.” She pauses, hesitant eyes flicking up and down my face. “I want to stay with you and the others.”
“The others meaning…?”
“Cash and Bishop. And you.” She takes her hand from mine to run it through my hair.
I exhale, enjoying the sensual feeling of her pretty, manicured fingers scratching against my scalp.
Fuck. This woman is doing something unholy to me that must be contained before things get too out of hand.
She’s a virgin. A goddamnvirgin.
But if we take that from her, we’re not just taking her innocence—we’re also taking her life. The longer she stays here, the worse it will get. It’ll either be Reaper Sons taking her life on their next visit, or one of the club members here. I imagine Grizzly shooting her through the heart, having two of his patch members throw her in the bonfire afterward.“It’s for your own good that she’s dead,”is the sort of thing he’d say. “Now, you can get back to work.”
The door flies open, Cash and Bishop bringing in the scent of smoke. Seeing Melissa, they soften their expressions and run over to smooth their hands over her body, bringing her into a hug.
“It’s okay,” Cash says, sitting next to her on the bed. “We’re so sorry that you had to?—”
“Alright! She doesn’t need to be reminded,” I say.
Bishop takes a seat on the other side of Melissa. “You’re safe. That’s all you need to know.”
I flash Bishop a look, knowing full well that she’s not. Not really.
Now, yes. But as long as she’s here, she’s in danger.
“We need to get her back,” Cash says, as if reading my mind.
