If they did, he would find a way to kill them.
Even if it cost him his life, he would find a way to save Isabella and their baby.
A cry of pain took his attention for a split second, and it was all his attacker needed to use it to his advantage. Catching sight of the other man slamming a fist into Isabella’s head right before the man fighting him took them to the ground, anger renewed Tobias’ strength, and he managed to flip their positions, pinning the other man beneath him.
Slamming his fist into the man’s face, he grinned at the sound of bones snapping and the blood that spurted from the other man’s now broken nose.
Clamping a hand around his attacker’s neck, he squeezed as hard as he could. They were on a time crunch here. Tobias had no doubt the driver would leave his colleague behind as soon asthey had Isabella in the vehicle, and she was already hanging limply in the arms of the other man.
Just as the man beneath him began to still, and a little ray of hope edged in, he gave one last buck, a desperate attempt to dislodge Tobias so he could gain the upper hand and save his own life.
The thrust of the man’s hips wasn't much, back when he’d been a Delta Force operator it would have been nothing more than a tiny little blip, barely noticeable.
But he wasn't a Delta Force operator any longer.
Because of the injury to his back.
An injury that was aggravated by the small jerk of the man’s body.
The way the man thrust upward twisted Tobias’ back enough to send red-hot spikes of agony searing up his spine.
Losing his grip on the man’s neck, Tobias’ body convulsed as pain rendered him all but immobile.
Breathing hard, the other man took advantage and shoved him sideways.
He tried to move. Tried to get back up. Through his blurry vision, he could see that Isabella was being shoved into the car, in mere seconds she’d be gone. But he couldn’t move. His back was spasming so badly that all he could do was try to hold onto consciousness.
With him now on the ground, the other man stood above him, a smirk on his face. While his attacker was still breathing hard, and there were red marks on his neck, it was no comfort to know he’d been so close to saving Isabella only to have failed.
And he had failed.
There was no way he was going to be able to move for a while, let alone get back on his feet and fight.
It was over.
Isabella and his child were going to suffer and then die a horrific death.
All because of him.
Above him the man chuckled. “Thought you were going to put up more of a fight. Heard you were a former Delta Force.”
“Leave her,” he said, begged more likely, his voice weak as pain rendered him almost completely useless.
Another laugh. “She’s worth a bundle to someone. We were told to do whatever we wanted with you. I had planned on killing you, but I think that’s kind of unnecessary. After all, you're so pathetic you couldn’t even save the girl.”
With that, the man turned away and hurried to the vehicle, jumping into the passenger seat.
Tobias tried to force his uncooperative body to move. To get to the weapon he’d dropped. If he could get his hands on it, he might be able to shoot out the vehicle’s tires, delaying their getaway enough that the cops could show up.
He had no doubt they were on their way, but they weren't going to get there in time.
Although he tried to move, the spasming agony enflaming his entire back meant he could do little more than flail uselessly about.
There was nothing else for him to do but lie there and watch as the vehicle sped off down the street, taking his reason for living along with it.
They were gone.
Gone.
