Heard a shout from the ER. Got up. “I think I need to go.”
“You sure you’re okay?”
“Yes. I promise.”
“Remember, you’re not alone, JoJo.”
No, no she wasn’t. “Thanks, Mom.”
She’d hung up and then walked into the fight.
Now, Crew’s thumb ran over her hand, and a sweet quiet settled between them.
“Your mom okay?”
“Yes. She was just worried about me. She…I don’t know—she had this feeling she should call me.”
He arched an eyebrow.
“What?”
“If you had been in the ER, it probably would have gone down differently.”
Oh.
And his meaning hit her.
He looked away, drew in a breath. Turned back. “So, it looks like I’m homeless.”
She laughed, and he smiled, and it simply filled her up.
“I think probably the guys could find something for you to do at the fire base.”
“Like keep an eye on you?”
Her mouth opened. “I don’t need…”
He winked. Oh, he was cute, despite all his cuts and bruises, his mouth tweaked up one side.
Okay, maybe she did.
He started to get up, but a hand clamped his shoulder, and she looked up to see Rio sit beside him. He wore a grim look.
“I swear, if you tell me I have to go back undercover?—”
“No,” Rio said. “It’s over.”
“Yeah, it is.”
“No, I mean the investigation is over.”
Skye had come up, now sat beside JoJo. “You okay?”
Jo nodded.
“Good thing you were wearing your tracker ring. We got a fix on you and realized it was coming from the fire on the radar. You set that fire, right? Smart.”
“What do you mean the investigation is over?” Crew, his voice a little low but sharp. “We have SOR scattered all over Alaska, and sure, we figured out their immediate plan, but what about the bigger picture? Who’s the doc? And the big guy. And what about Jer?”
