Flick nodded in agreement because something wasn’t right.

“I agree, but I’m concerned it shouldn’t be us. Even with disguises, I’d worry. I thought Compass and Maureen were joining us down here?” Flick asked.

“They rode in last night. They’re staying at the Omni. Compass wanted to touch base with one of the servers they met during their stay while at theMotorcycles, Mobsters and Mayhemsigning. He made a very favorable impression on them. Compass was going to see if he was interested in possibly prospecting either for the Cider Creek Chapter or as a Nomad. I’ll text him. He and Maureen or the guy would be perfect to visit the shelter tomorrow,” Beth said.

Flick waited while Beth was texting, but once she was done, he needed to talk.

“Can we talk through this? I feel like tonight threw a wrench in any theories we had,” Flick said.

“I agree, so let’s talk through what we know. We know that somehow the businesses of the club, the shelter, and the appliance warehouse are connected. We know that on Fridays, for sure, a truck leaves the club, continues onto the shelter, picks up something, then goes to the appliance warehouse,” Beth said.

“Right,” Flick replied.

“Hey guys, we’re at the appliance warehouse. Seven trucks identical to the one you tailed have pulled in and parked inside the building here,” Winnie informed them.

“Seven trucks? Where the heck did they all come from?” Cowboy asked.

“Thoughts, Beth and Flick?” Bootstrap asked.

“I think we keep surveillance around the clock on the warehouse, and we get somebody inside the shelter tomorrow. I think if any of those trucks leave the warehouse, we might need to help them take a break somewhere. I want to know what’s in the back of those trucks,” Beth said.

“Agreed,” Bootstrap replied.

Flick drove toward the clubhouse. The dog sitter was at their house tonight while they were supposedly at an overnight gala.

Flick wasn’t sure what was next, but he was anxious for this to be over. He guessed he’d have to get used to his woman being in danger because of her job, but it certainly worried him because, despite her being a badass, he wanted to protect her.

He pulled into the clubhouse and parked the vehicle inside the large garage the club had. He and Beth got out, and she immediately pulled her wig off.

“My head was sweating. I won’t miss being undercover when we get done. I’m going to have to clean this wig somehow or it’s going to smell.”

Flick threw an arm around her. “You don’t smell bad, just a little musky. Shall we go look at the board again to see if it gives us an idea of what is going on?”

“Sure. I’ll never sleep until we go over stuff again. I just can’t figure out what is going on.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Beth was frustrated. Flick and Bootstrap were being backup for Compass, Maureen, and Zach. They were visiting the shelter as grandparents and a parent wanting to get a dog for their granddaughter. Zach wasn’t married, nor did he have kids, but he’d been willing to help out. Bear and Dodge were keeping an eye on the appliance warehouse.

Beth, Winnie, Della, and Rose were at the clubhouse, waiting to hear from them. She was sitting, bored, and feeling like she needed to do something. They’d decided to wait until close to closing time at the shelter to have fewer people around.

“I so want this over. The guys need to find something out,” Beth said, grabbing a soda.

“I agree. Cider Creek is not like Bluff Creek. I’m ready to get back there where it’s clean and there’s always awesome food I don’t have to cook for myself,” Rose said.

“Me too. The eye candy is nice, but I’ve been spoiled having Regina make the Sunday meal and also having the diner,” Della said.

“Bootstrap did say he has a couple people set up to come in for interviews. He’s even written a job description,” Winnie said, smiling.

“Rose, once we take care of the threat, are you moving back to Texas?” Beth asked.

Rose sighed and took a swig of her drink. “I’m not sure. I know working as a police officer again isn’t for me. I enjoy what I do for the bail bonds, but I’m not sure I want to do that forever.”

Beth’s phone beeped with a text.

Flick: Code Monica, heading back.

Beth sent a thumbs-up and resigned herself to waiting on Flick to get back.
