“I’m just looking out for her,” Trevor said. “I’m sure this has been so stressful, and as her friend—”

“Herfriend?” Cade gave him a derisive snort. “Please. You’re not worried about Everleigh.” He pointed at Trevor. “You’re out for yourself.”

Trevor’s lips worked, but no words came out.

Everleigh folded her arms over her middle as anxiety hurtled through her. She had to do something to break this up. But what?

Cade took another step toward him, and he stood almost a head taller than Trevor. “Why don’t you just do us all a favor and leave?”

She grabbed Cade’s arm. “Please stop.”

“No.” Cade pulled his arm away. “This guy is up to no good, and it’s time to face it, Everleigh. Stop being so naïve.”

She gasped at the barb. Hadn’t their friendship moved beyond that? “I’m not naïve. I’m just not rude like you.” She pointed to his chest.

“Cade...” Roger appeared behind him. “This isn’t what I’d call treading lightly.”

Everleigh stared at him. What on earth was he talking about?

Trevor held his hands up. “If you really want me to go, then I will.”

“No.” Cade shook his head. “I want you to tell Everleigh the truth. Why are youreallyhere, Trevor?”

“I’m here because Everleigh is my friend.”

“Yeah, right!” Cade bellowed. “The truth, Trevor. I saw you before you came here.”

Trevor looked confused. “What does that mean?”

“I saw you over at Beach Home Improvement. I know who you were talking to.”

Something unreadable traveled over Trevor’s face, and a sick feeling drifted over Everleigh.

“What’s he talking about, Trevor?” she asked.

Trevor’s countenance turned haughty. “I have no idea.”

“Come on,” Cade demanded. “Are you going to tell her, or should I?”

Trevor took a step toward Cade. “You know what your problem is?” he asked. “You think you know everything, but you don’t.”

“Is that right?” Cade’s hands balled into tight fists. “Do you want to know whatyourproblem is?”

“I thought you’d never tell me.” Trevor’s dark eyes glittered. Was he enjoying this?

Cade jammed his finger into Trevor’s chest. “You’re a liar, a user, and a phony. And it’s time that Everleigh knew the truth about you.”

Trevor’s hand formed a fist, and he pulled his arm back.

Oh no!Worry shot through Everleigh. She had to do something!

The two men stood nose to nose, and panic grabbed Everleigh by the throat.

“That’s enough!” She wedged herself between them, then pushed them away from each other. “Just calm down.” Her focus pinged from one to the other, and she shook her finger in both their faces. “The two of you need to grow up.”

Cade’s lips twisted.

“If you’re not going to help with the framing, then leave,” she told them, her pulse galloping.
