“I don’t know what happened,” she said, wiping a new set of tears away. “One day, we were good, planning to hang out, and the next, I woke up on a plane, headed for here with a note.”

“He got some shit to fix,” I said, shaking my head.

“So did I; I buried my husband, I mourned a marriage, and he sent me away.”

“Yale-”

“You know what?” She interrupted me and shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. I’m here; he’s there. I have a hell of a career, and I’m happy. It’s time for me to move on with my life. If Amethyst can’t be brave enough to face me, then he can stay where the fuck he is. I’m about to start living my life, maybe go on a date or two. Who the fuck knows.”

“I hear you, sis,” I said, nodding. What I didn’t say was if Amethyst heard her talking like that, he’d kill any and every nigga that was crazy enough to step to her. “But let me get out of here before Fable wakes up.”

“Call me when you’re ready for me to design her ring,” Yale nodded and returned to her car. “I’ll stop whatever I’m doing and come straight to you.”

“Bet.” I leaned through the window and kissed her cheek. “Be safe, don’t speed in this damn car.”

“Yeah, right,” she laughed. “I send every ticket I get to your brother. He may not be talking to me, but he is paying for this lifestyle.”

I laughed and tapped the hood of the car. Yale blew me a kiss, rolled up her window, and drove away. The blue sports car sped past me, and I returned to the car. Fable was still asleep when I opened the door. I got in, set the food on the floor between my feet, and relaxed in my seat.

“Ay, let’s go,” I called out to my driver, and the car started to move.

FABLE

“You said nowhere crazy,”I reminded Pyrite as I looked around. We were in the desert, or what appeared to be one. “This looks like somewhere crazy.”

“It’s one of my favorite spots,” Pyrite said as he unfolded a blanket and laid it out. “When I need a minute, I come here.”

“And where exactly is here?”

“New Mexico,” he answered with a small laugh. I stopped walking around and turned to face him.

“New Mexico?” I repeated, and he nodded. “Why are we in New Mexico?”

“On a date,” he replied. He straightened the blanket and then put his hand out for me to take. We sat down, me between his legs with my back to his front. He whistled at our driver, and he turned off the headlights. We were engulfed in darkness, but I knew I was safe with Pyrite. “Look up.”

I did what he instructed and instantly fell in love at the sight. I’d seen stars before, but seeing them like this was different. The stars shined brighter, the moon looked bigger, and it was beautiful.

“Damn,” I said, looking around. “This is why you come here?”

“Yeah,” he chuckled. “When shit becomes too much, and I need to get away, this is where I come. Nobody bothers me except Yale, but that’s because she swears a coyote is going to get my ass.”

“Who’s Yale?” I asked. It felt like his list of friends was never-ending. Every time I turned around, he was mentioning a new person. If they all ended up in the same room together, I would need them to wear name tags.

“Amethyst's best friend; she lives here now,” he answered, and I nodded. “Nah, that’s not right.” He chuckled, and I adjusted my body to look up at him while still in his arms.

“What do you mean?”

“Amethyst sent her here to save her life; she just doesn’t know it,” he said, and I lifted my brow. “I told you my baby brother wasn’t always legit, right?”

“Yeah,” I nodded.

“He unintentionally put her life in danger when they were younger, and it's coming back to bite him in the ass,” he explained, and I was even more confused.

“You’re talking in riddles.”

Pyrite looked down at me and smiled before kissing me. “It's not my story to tell, Itty Bitty, it's theirs.”

“Then call Amethyst so he can tell me what happened.”
