Page 89 of Nitro

Daisy pads out from the hall. She’s wearing pink pajama shorts and a matching tank top that shows off more than a little midriff. Too bad Matrix left. She’d be a great distraction for him.

“Can I get you anything?” she asks.

“No. But thank you. I made breakfast for Holly and me already. Nothing fancy, so I didn’t make extra for the guys. Sorry.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got a new quiche recipe I’ve been dying to try.” She smiles.

A knock sounds on the front door.

“That’s probably Doc.” I go to answer it.

“Hey, Nitro. Good to see you, man.” Doc gives me a one-armed bro hug. He’s carrying his medical bag in his other hand.

“You too. Thanks for coming to check on her.”

“She told me that she’s been nauseous. Any chance she could be pregnant?”

“I doubt it. She’s been taking her birth control pills since before we met.”

“Does she ever miss any doses?”

“Not that I know of, but you should ask her. She was in the shower earlier. I’ll check and see if she’s decent.”

Doc waits outside the bedroom door while I go in. Holly is dressed in a pair of sweatpants and an oversized sweater that hangs off one shoulder. Scratch everything I thought earlier. I’m definitely losing another night’s sleep. Worth it.

“Ready for Doc?” I ask.

“Sure. Send him in.”

“I’ll be in the kitchen helping Daisy while you two chat.”

“Don’t you want to stay?” she asks.

“If you’re okay with it, sure. I just thought I’d give you privacy if you wanted it.”

“That’s not necessary, but thank you for being so considerate.”

“Of course, kitten.” I kiss her softly before going to open the door for Doc.

“How’s my favorite patient?” Doc asks as he walks in.

“I bet you say that to all the girls.”

“Only the pretty ones.” He chuckles and glances at me. I know he’s just kidding, so I let it go. “Anyway, what kind of symptoms are you experiencing?”

“I feel like I’m going to barf pretty much all the time.” She flushes.

“Okay, what else?”

“I feel bloated and like I have to pee constantly.”

“Are your breasts tender?”

“Now that you mention it, yeah?” She puts her hand over her chest. “You don’t think … I mean, I’m taking my birth control pills.”

“They’re not one hundred percent effective, even if you take them at the same time every day. Have you missed any?”

“Maybe once or twice, but that’s not enough to leave me unprotected, is it?” Her wide eyes dart from Doc to me.
