“Oh, there’s no one in particular…” Daisy’s voice trails off.
“Bullshit.” Nina pulls out onto the highway.
“So, um, where are we starting first?” Daisy asks, quickly changing the subject.
“There’s a new baby boutique in downtown Bozeman. We’re starting there. Lunch will be at the Thai place unless Holly’s tummy is acting up. We’ll decide when we get there.” Nina glances at me in the rearview mirror.
I smile and mouth ‘thank you.’ Although my morning sickness isn’t as bad, I still have days where anything other than white rice is guaranteed to come out the way it went in.
“So, I’ve got a bit of a confession,” Julia says.
“What did you do?” Nina slides her gaze to the side.
“I kind of already bought a few things. What? I couldn’t help it. Like you didn’t do it too,” Julia says to Nina.
“You promised you’d wait.”
“So did you!”
“I also picked up some clothes,” Daisy confesses.
“See, sheisone of us,” Nina says.
“I don’t know where I’ll fit everything. Nitro’s room isn’t that big.”
“Haven’t you been house shopping yet?” Julia asks.
“We checked out a few places, but they’re so expensive.”
“Pfft.” Nina waves away my concern. “What you consider a lot of money is a drop in the bucket for me. Your budget is two million. Use it.”
“That’s a ton of money.” Daisy frowns.
“Well, I have truckloads. In the bank, of course. Banks, really. Anyway, if you need help house hunting, I’m happy to tag along with you and Nitro.”
“Are you sure you’re okay with buying us a place? It’s so generous.”
“You’re making one of my boys happy. That’s all I ever wanted for them. Your love for him is priceless. I can’t put a number on the amount of joy you’ve given him. Two million is nothing. But you’d better pick something or I’m going to choose for you. I don’t want my grandson living in the clubhouse. That’s no place for children.”
“We’ll spend more time looking,” I promise.
“Good. Now, did you call the OB/GYN Doc recommended?” Nina asks.
“I have an appointment to meet him next week.”
“Excellent. And you’re taking your vitamins?”
“Yes, Mom.” I grin.
“Speaking of mothers, is yours still refusing to take your calls?”
“Yes.”
“What a bitch,” Julia mutters.
“I know, right?” Daisy shakes her head.
“Not having to talk to her isn’t the worst thing in the world,” I say. “Trust me. I won’t do anything right when it comesto my son. Nothing has ever been good enough for her, and now that I’m marrying a biker instead of a doctor, she’s furious.”
