“How do you thinkRollycopes with this?” Anabelle asked.
“He’d be snuggled up in his dry burrow nice and warm, I imagine.”
“Probably asleep and dreaming of apples.”
I laughed. “I’d say you’re right.”
She was quiet for a while then spoke softly. “I don’t normally do this. I…” She shrugged.
“Relax, Anabelle, I didn’t think you were some easy lay. I’m not sure how to explain it, but as soon as I saw you, it was as if I knew you were someone I needed in my life. Maybe that sounds corny, but it’s true.”
She giggled. “I have to admit to wanting you too. Mind you, you scared the hell out of me that day.”
“Why?”
“Well, I wasn’t expecting anyone. I honestly thought I was alone and then you spoke. My heart practically leaped from my chest.”
“Oh, sweetheart, I didn’t mean to.”
“Hey, not your fault. I imagine that seal would have panicked if I stood on it.”
“That’s what I was worried about. He was enormous and I’m not sure they are very friendly.”
We were quiet for a few minutes.
“You’re truly not married?”
I could hear worry in her voice. “No, I’m as free as the birds, as they say.”
“That’s good.” She snuggled closer.
I couldn’t resist kissing the top of her head.
“Ana, tell me about your life. Sorry. I should have asked if I could call you Ana. Or would you prefer Anabelle?”
“Ana’s fine. I like it.”
“Thank you, Ana, tell me your story.”
