“Oh thanks, Mum.”She could hear the relief in Allison’s voice.“If I can just get him to settle and sleep, I think he’ll be fine.”

Lucy hung up and went back to the group. She quickly explained that her little grandson had taken ill and she needed to leave. She looked around for Jack or Sebastian but couldn’t see either.Disappointed, she’d wanted to tell them she had to leave and the reason why. She’d hate them to think she’d just snuck off.Maybe they hadn’t meant it when they wanted to take her to dinner, but she would love to see them again.Sadly, now it wouldn’t happen.

She thanked Barb and, with her fingers crossed, said, “If anyone asks for me can you let them know I was called away for a family emergency.”

As she fought her way through the crowded club, she searched but couldn’t see either of the men.It was impossible to see everywhere and she was too worried about Davie to search them out.Maybe she should have told Barb to give them her number, but then the more she thought about it, the more she figured they were just being polite. She made it outside and walked quickly to her car.

“Well, my adventure’s over before it even started.Still, I’ll never forget that dance.”

ChapterFive

Stopping on the wayat an all-night pharmacy, Lucy made it to Allison’s in half an hour.

Allison greeted her at the door with a very unhappy, and loudly screaming, babe in her arms.Lucy took the baby as she handed over the medicine, then followed Allison into the kitchen where Allison measured out a dose for little Davie and tipped it into his mouth.

Between the two of them, they managed to finally get Davie to stop crying and after three quarters of an hour, he fell into an exhausted sleep.

Lucy lay a hand on his forehead and, to her, he felt cooler than he had when she’d first arrived.

“Oh, Mum, I was so worried.I was about to wake Lizzie and Colin so I could take them all to the chemist.”

Lucy explained where she’d been and why. “I’m sorry I didn’t hear my phone. It was noisy where I was.”

“I’m sorry too, Mum.I didn’t think.I kind of panicked.Do you want to go back?”

“No, no, it’s fine. It’s late and anyway the place closes at two.”Lucy glanced at the clock. It was after one.

“Do you want a cuppa, Mum?”

“No, I’ll go now that Davie’s asleep.Ring me later in the morning and let me know how he is.”

“I will ...and thank you so much, Mum.”

Allison hugged her, and Lucy went back out to her car.

By the time Lucy unlocked her front door, it was two in the morning. It had been an emotional night, filled with highs and lows.Disappointment was foremost in her mind—not seeing the two sexy men before she left. But then perhaps it was a good thing.
