“A baby,” I whisper. “We’re gonna have a baby.”

She nods, her eyes shining.

“I thought we were going to keep trying and trying, and here you go, getting pregnant right away. No fair!”

Her face falls into my neck as she laughs.

“I love you,” I say hoarsely.

Her smile softens. “I love you too.”

I tug her to the couch and Jezebel climbs on Addy’s lap, looking extremely unimpressed. The kittens are already chasing each other again.

“You know…” Addy rests her head against my chest. “If we can handle this chaos, we can probably handle a baby.”

“You think so?”

She nods. “I do.”

“Yeah, but…” I swallow hard and look at her out of the corner of my eye. “Maybe we should keep the kittens still…you know, for practice.”

She laughs. “I’m not surprised you want to keep all of them.”

“You’re not? But I was so anti-teenage mom.”

“Until you met these babies,” she says.

Gizmo scales my arm and flops back onto my shoulder. I swear this guy thinks I’m his personal pillow. And scratching post.

“You know what this means, right?” Addy says.

“What?”

“We’re about to be very outnumbered.”

I kiss her forehead, feeling her smile against my chest.

“Switching to a zone defense,” I say.

She laughs.

“We’ll figure it out,” I say.

“Yeah,” she agrees, her voice soft. “We will.”

Shadow pounces onto Elsa’s tail and she lets out an indignant squeak, chasing after him and knocking over one of Winnie’s toys in the process.

“We’re so screwed,” I say.

Addy laughs. “Yep.”

I wrap my arm around her, feeling her warmth, the steady beat of her heart against mine. The mayhem around us. The overwhelming magnitude of everything we’ve just signed up for.

“The kids will be so happy to have a baby brother or sister. We’re gonna be just fine,” I say.

“I know,” she whispers.
